Jannik Sinner has fulfilled his duty at the Masters 1000 tournament in Cincinnati and advanced to the round of 16. The South Tyrolean defeated the Canadian Gabriel Diallo 6:2, 7:6 in the third round after 1 hour and 52 minutes: After a dominant first set, Sinner had to fight more in the second round, but prevailed in the tiebreak.
In the round of 16, the currently fifth-ranked player in the world rankings will now face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino. Sinner's record so far is clearly in his favor with 3:0 wins.
However, the tournament is over for the second Italian in the competition, Lorenzo Sonego. He put up a tough fight against fourth seed Taylor Fritz from the USA, but was beaten 6:7 and 5:7 after more than two hours of play. The match was also marked by a 75-minute interruption due to a power cut.
There was positive news from the women's doubles: the duo of Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini celebrated a successful start to the tournament. They defeated the Serbian-Russian pairing of Olga Danilovic and Anastasia Potapova 6:3 and 7:6 to also reach the round of 16.
