With a courageous jump into the Tiber, two carabinieri saved the life of a young man in Rome on Monday evening. The 22-year-old had just thrown himself into the water from the Ponte Sisto with suicidal intent.
After receiving an emergency call from a witness, the two officers from the Radiomobile unit immediately rushed to the riverbank. When they saw the man fighting for his life in the middle of the river, they didn't hesitate for a second and jumped into the water themselves. However, the rescue proved difficult: the young man resisted help, tried to break free and repeatedly swallowed river water.
With combined forces and the help of other colleagues on the shore, the two police officers finally managed to pull the man ashore. The 22-year-old Ethiopian, who is known to the authorities for mental health problems and previous suicide attempts, was taken to hospital out of danger.
The two heroic carabinieri were also medically examined as a precaution. Their decisive intervention prevented a tragedy in the heart of the capital.
