After a three-month summer break, the ball is rolling again in Italy's top division. The new Serie A 2025/26 season kicks off this Saturday with four games and promises to be full of emotion and important decisions right from the start. Traditionally, the reigning champions open the season: coach Antonio Conte's SSC Napoli host newly promoted Sassuolo at 18:30. In the evening, all eyes will turn to Milan and Roma, where two influential coaches will take up their posts.
Napoli's hunt for a historic second title
Three months after celebrating their fourth Scudetto, SSC Napoli's mission to defend their title begins. The declared aim of head coach Antonio Conte is to become the first in the club's glorious history to win a second consecutive league title - a feat that even Diego Maradona was denied. However, Conte will have to do without his star striker Romelu Lukaku, who is seriously injured. Instead, new Premier League superstar Kevin De Bruyne will make his eagerly awaited debut in midfield and is expected to lead the attack.
New era in Milan and Rome
New chapters also begin today in Milan and Rome. More than eleven years after his departure, Massimiliano Allegri returns to the AC Milan bench. However, he will be without the injured key player Rafael Leão for his home debut at 20:45 against promoted Cremonese. The era of Gian Piero Gasperini will begin at AS Roma at exactly the same time. The long-time successful coach of Atalanta Bergamo is set to lead the capital city team back into the Champions League after a long absence, but will face a challenging opponent in the form of reigning cup winners Bologna.
