A tragic weekend on Italy's roads claimed a high number of lives and injuries. Particularly shocking is an accident on the A4 Turin-Milan, in which a wrong-way driver killed four people on Saturday evening. The incident occurred between Novara Est and Marcallo Mesero, near the junction to Malpensa Airport. According to initial investigations, a vehicle driven by an elderly man traveling in the opposite direction collided head-on with a car carrying four people. In addition to the wrong-way driver, three occupants of the other vehicle also died. One woman was seriously injured and had to be flown by helicopter to a hospital in Milan.
But the A4 was not the only scene of an accident. In Apulia, a 33-year-old pregnant woman died in a serious accident on the SS 16 near Mola di Bari on Saturday. Also in Bari, an ambulance belonging to the emergency services collided with an SUV, injuring five people, including several rescue workers.
The province of Bergamo recorded a total of four victims in various accidents. There was also a dramatic incident in the province of Cuneo when a car plunged down a hundred-metre slope. The occupants were rescued by the fire department and taken to hospital. Further serious accidents with injuries were reported in Pistoia and Breda di Piave (province of Treviso), which illustrates the sad outcome of this weekend on Italy's roads.
