The General Command of the Carabinieri has responded with an unmistakable clarification to a Article in the daily newspaper L'Unità and rejected the accusations made in the article as unfounded and damaging to its reputation. In the article, the Carabinieri were accused of having acted out of "revenge" in connection with the "Almasri case".
In an official statement, the Carabinieri leadership described the content of the article by journalist Paolo Comi as unfounded and the statements contained therein as a serious affront to the honor and dignity of the institution. The idea of acting out of revenge is "completely alien" to the values and over two hundred years of history of the Carabinieri. Such motives fundamentally contradict the institutional culture and way of working.
According to the General Command, in this specific case, the responsible investigation team in Rome only carried out the tasks assigned by the judicial authority. This was done with the usual professionalism and diligence and in strict compliance with responsibilities.
The Carabinieri announced that they would continue to protect their reputation and their work from unfounded journalistic reports in the future. Such reports have the potential to undermine the trust of citizens and institutions in their work.
