A hotel employee on Capri has used a particularly ingenious method to steal from wealthy guests: He stole an expensive designer bag from a room and replaced it with a deceptively genuine fake. The police were able to catch the man before he could commit any further crimes.
The fraud was discovered after the manager of a well-known hotel on Via Tragara noticed the suspicious behavior of the 28-year-old man from Naples on the surveillance videos. He alerted the police. The officers checked the employee, who had a criminal record, and found another counterfeit branded bag in his rucksack.
As the investigation revealed, the man had already completed a swap and hidden a third fake in the hotel for the next coup. He was apparently planning a whole series. He was charged with grand theft and receiving stolen goods. The stolen handbag was returned to its rightful owner and the counterfeits were confiscated.
