An alarming incident occurred today on the important north-south connection of the Brenner railroad line. In the village of Roncafort near Trento, a regional train collided with several freight wagons, which led to the immediate closure of the affected section. Fortunately, there were no serious injuries in the accident.
According to initial findings, several wagons became detached from a freight train during a shunting operation. They rolled uncontrollably along the track and finally collided with a regional train waiting at a signal. The force of the impact caused one of the freight wagons to jump off the rails. The passengers and train crew were shocked, but only two people were slightly injured and required medical treatment.
Effects on rail traffic
Train services between Mezzocorona and Trento were immediately suspended to ensure safety and to allow recovery work to be carried out. Railroad company technicians and the railroad police have begun investigating the exact cause of the accident and are examining the damaged track. The Italian state railroad reacted quickly and set up a rail replacement service with buses for the route between Bolzano and Trento. However, travelers must also be prepared for restrictions, possible train cancellations and considerable delays on long-distance services.
