A devastating fire is currently keeping Sardinia on tenterhooks. The picturesque beach of Punta Molentis near Villasimius is enveloped in a cloud of smoke. Suspected arsonists have started an inferno that is spreading rapidly and engulfing the Mediterranean scrub. The flames even reached the beach, where dramatic scenes unfolded. Panicked bathers had to be evacuated in rubber boats, while an estimated 200 cars in the parking lots were engulfed by the flames.
The strong mistral wind fans the fires mercilessly and makes firefighting work considerably more difficult. Rescue teams are deployed on a large scale: fire department teams, helicopters, Canadair aircraft and water rescue specialists are fighting tirelessly against the fire. The port authority has been mobilized to support a possible evacuation from the sea. Environmentalists lament the enormous ecological damage. A "jewel of the environment" has literally gone up in smoke. The situation remains tense and there is great concern for people and nature.
