In response to the increasing overtourism on the Seceda in Val Gardena/Gröden, representatives of the province, municipalities and tourism agreed on concrete countermeasures on Friday. In order to control the rush to the hotspot fueled by social media, a booking system with timeslots based on the model of the Braies Valley is to be introduced in future.
At a meeting in Ortisei, there was unanimous agreement that the limit has been reached. The mass influx was affecting the quality of life of the locals and was at odds with sustainable quality tourism. "Tourism must not be at the expense of quality of life," emphasized Provincial Councillor Luis Walcher.
A special working group has now been set up to develop a concept for the Seceda in the near future. The solution is to be developed locally - "by Val Gardena/Gröden for Val Gardena/Gröden" - and also provide for exemptions for the local population. The province will support the process via the IDM.
According to Provincial Councillor for Mobility Daniel Alfreider, the measures for visitor guidance are part of a more comprehensive strategy. At the same time, further investments are being made in local public transport and work is being done to better manage the mobility of day visitors.
The system developed at Seceda is intended to serve as a transferable model and could also be used in other heavily frequented areas of South Tyrol in the future in order to make tourism sustainable and in harmony with the needs of the population.
