The incident occurred at the weekend on the busy A22 Brenner highway. After a break at the Paganella Est service area, a father drove on towards the Brenner border and forgot his two young daughters in the car. Thanks to attentive helpers and the police, the curious story had a happy ending.
Fatal assumption with far-reaching consequences
The man was firmly convinced that his daughters were asleep in the back seats after the stopover. Without checking the back of the car, he continued his journey and covered a considerable distance. He was already approaching the state border when his phone rang and reality caught up with him. It was the traffic police from Trento on the line, who informed him of his forgotten "cargo" and asked him to turn back immediately.
Clever girls and exemplary helpers
The two girls quickly grasped the situation. Although they did not speak Italian, they drew the attention of the service station staff and were even able to give the helpers their father's telephone number. The visibly frightened father immediately turned back. When they were reunited, the girls were calm and well. As a matter of routine, the public prosecutor's office at the juvenile court was also informed about the incident last Tuesday. The father's shock is likely to linger for a long time after the inevitable scolding.
