Dorio, Lake Como - A boat trip on Lake Como ended in tragedy for a German vacationing family on Monday. A father is missing after he heroically rescued his two children from the water, but was himself swept away by the lake's currents. The intensive search for the man continues.
Heroic deed with a tragic outcome
The family from Germany was enjoying a quiet afternoon on a boat off the coast of Dorio on the Lecco shore when the accident happened. When his two young children fell into the water, the father didn't hesitate for a second and jumped in after them. He managed to save the children and bring them to safety, but then apparently lost his strength. In front of other tourists on the beach, he was caught by the treacherous currents of the lake and pulled under the surface.
Search continues at full speed
Witnesses on the shore immediately raised the alarm and triggered a large-scale operation. A fire department helicopter, several rescue boats from the fire department, the coastguard and the local water rescue service as well as specialized divers from Veneto immediately began the search, which continued throughout the night. As the efforts so far have been unsuccessful, a remote-controlled underwater robot from Sardinia is to be deployed tomorrow, Wednesday. The special device can penetrate to depths of up to 220 meters and will systematically search the seabed for the missing man.
