Bassano del Grappa - Just one day after a devious knife attack on a high school teacher in Bassano del Grappa, the Carabinieri arrested a suspect this morning. The man, who is strongly suspected of attempted murder, is a 33-year-old Italian with no fixed abode who is known to the police.
Sneak attack on the way to work
The shocking incident took place on Monday morning at around 7:40 am. A 62-year-old teacher was walking to his secondary school when he was approached by a stranger on the pretext of asking for a cigarette. Immediately afterwards, the perpetrator stabbed the teacher in the left shoulder from behind with a kitchen knife. The handle of the weapon broke off and the blade remained stuck in the victim's body. The attacker fled unrecognized. The injured teacher was immediately given emergency treatment and transferred to a specialist hospital in Vicenza to have the blade surgically removed. His life was not in danger at any time, but he is in intensive care for treatment.
Successful manhunt thanks to technology and witnesses
The Carabinieri immediately launched an extensive manhunt. The key to success was the meticulous analysis of video footage from public and private surveillance cameras. Although the crime itself was not recorded, by analyzing the footage the investigators were able to fully reconstruct the perpetrator's movements before and after the attack and thus create a clear perpetrator profile. The decisive clue for the capture finally came from an attentive shopkeeper near the station, who recognized the wanted man and alerted the authorities. The 33-year-old was arrested shortly afterwards and taken to Vicenza prison, where he is now awaiting further legal action.
