Italy is launching a unique training program: for the first time outside the USA, a flying school for training F-35 pilots is being set up in Sicily. Defense Minister Guido Crosetto announced the establishment of the "International Flight Training School" (IFTS) at Decimomannu Air Force Base. In future, US pilots will also complete their "Top Gun" training there.
This highlights the country's outstanding position in the F-35 program. To date, Italy is the only country apart from the USA where the F-35 jets are assembled - in Cameri in Piedmont. The new training facility underlines Italy's planned role as a global hub for modern air combat technologies.
Strategic expansion of the defense architecture
The IFTS covers Phase IV training, from basic instruction to complex air combat tactics. On the approximately 130,000 m² site, 22 M-346 training aircraft (the Italian version T-346A from Leonardo) as well as two extensive simulators and state-of-the-art training rooms are available. The training includes formation, aerial refueling, day and night maneuvers in theory and practice and thus forms the ideal transition to 4th and 5th generation aircraft such as the F-35.
During the announcement at the air force base in Decimomannu (Sardinia), Minister Crosetto emphasized that defence not only guarantees military security, but is also an "engine for social, economic and technological innovation". In the presence of President Mattarella, he emphasized Italy's growing responsibility and dynamism within the network of friendly states and alliances. US soldiers are also set to use this high-tech training center in the near future.
European perspective and strengthening cooperation
Italy's initiative also strengthens the European security architecture. By the end of 2024, over 1,100 F-35s had already been delivered worldwide, of which more than 1,000 were operational. The new training center in Sicily is a response to the increasing demand for pilots and underlines the importance of multinational cooperation in modern air combat operations.
At the same time, Italy is underpinning its economic influence in the defense industry: in addition to the companies Leonardo in Turin and Fincantieri, the project is creating additional impetus for suppliers, research and regional development.
