A devastating fire has been keeping the south-east of Crete on tenterhooks since Wednesday. In the region around Ierapetra, the flames are raging on three fronts simultaneously and are spreading uncontrollably. The areas of Ferma, Achlia and Schinokapsala are particularly affected.
Around 1,500 people, including many tourists who were staying in hotels, had to leave their accommodation. They were brought to safety, some to other hotels and some to emergency accommodation in Ierapetra. A hall in the town was opened as temporary accommodation for around 200 people.
The fire department has massive difficulties with the extreme winds, which can reach force 11 in gusts. They keep pushing the flames in new directions, preventing effective containment. The rough terrain is also making firefighting work considerably more difficult. The local firefighters are now being supported by additional units from Athens as well as several firefighting planes and helicopters.
Strong winds exacerbate the health risks.
In addition to the acute fire risk, thick smoke is causing major problems. In several coastal towns such as Makry Gialos, the air quality has deteriorated considerably. The authorities warn against spending time outdoors and advise elderly people and people with pre-existing conditions to take particular care.
Several elderly people required medical treatment for breathing problems. Three firefighters also suffered minor injuries during the extinguishing work. Hospitals in the region are on heightened alert.
The weather situation remains tense. According to current forecasts, the strong winds are not expected to subside for the time being, which poses enormous challenges for the emergency services.
