A beauty contest in the Italian region of Campania has become the scene of a heated controversy that has caused a stir far beyond the borders of the fashion world. At the center of the outrage is the appearance of a 13-year-old girl who was sent down the catwalk in a bikini as a "mascotte" as part of a pre-selection for the prestigious "Miss Italia".
The "Mascotte" figure, which was introduced many years ago, is restricted to 17-year-old girls. Participation in the actual competition, on the other hand, is restricted to 18 to 30-year-olds.
The 13-year-old entered the stage, was filmed with cell phones and introduced herself to the jury with the following words: "I am 13 years old, a very determined girl full of dreams. I want to be a model and social media is already giving me that extra push to believe in myself."
The incident immediately triggered harsh criticism on social media and from the public.
Harsh consequences after public pressure
The national patron of the competition, Patrizia Mirigliani, reacted promptly and unequivocally to the incident. In an official statement, she clearly distanced herself from the decision of the local organizer and emphasized that such practices fundamentally contradict the values and regulations of "Miss Italia". The minimum age for participation is significantly higher. As a direct consequence, the license of the organizer responsible for the Campania region was revoked with immediate effect. Mirigliani emphasized that the protection of minors was a top priority and that the competition wanted to convey a positive and respectful message.
A debate about ethics and beauty ideals
The scandal has reignited the debate about the ethical boundaries of beauty contests in Italy. Critics denounce the fact that the presentation of minors in such a pose is not only inappropriate, but also promotes harmful beauty ideals and exposes the young participants to unhealthy pressure. The decision to sack the organizer is seen as an important signal that the organizers are taking public criticism seriously and are prepared to stand up for the protection of young people and the integrity of their brand.
