The Carabinieri have arrested nine young men aged between 18 and 21. They are suspected of being involved in a brutal altercation in Porto Palo di Menfi on July 13. A young man of Egyptian origin was attacked and injured with a knife. The incident took place on the beach and apparently began after a misunderstood look in one of the summer bars. The situation quickly escalated into racist abuse and massive violence.
The investigation by the carabinieri of the Sciacca company, assisted by the Palermo dog squadron, led to the execution of an arrest warrant issued by the investigating judge of the Sciacca court. Eight of those arrested are from Santa Margherita Belice, one from Montevago. They are accused of grievous bodily harm and illegal possession of weapons. The victim was beaten up, injured with a knife and broken glass and left unconscious on the beach. After initial treatment in Sciacca and Agrigento, he was released after a week.
Brass knuckles, a baton, a folding knife and a toy pistol were found during house searches. The authorities are also investigating whether there are any links to a similar brutal attack on a young Tunisian in Santa Margherita di Belice two months ago. The Carabinieri are increasing their presence in the region during the summer months to prevent further incidents and ensure security. The presumption of innocence applies; the final clarification of guilt will be decided by the court.
