Palermo - In close cooperation with courageous citizens, the carabinieri in Palermo have succeeded in arresting a man who is allegedly responsible for a brutal sexual assault on a young foreign student. The 24-year-old Somali man was taken into custody on suspicion of sexual violence and assault. The crime took place on the night of the Italian holiday Ferragosto on August 15.
Brutal attack and courageous escape
The young woman, who was in the city as part of a cultural exchange program, was approached by the man in the area of the popular Foro Italico. After she rejected his advances, he reportedly attacked her brutally, tearing her clothes and beating her. Despite significant injuries such as scratches, bites and bruises, the victim managed to break free and escape. She fled to a group of passers-by, who immediately rushed to her aid and alerted the authorities.
Citizens and carabinieri hand in hand
The quick reaction of the victim and the witnesses was crucial to the success of the investigation. The student was able to give a precise description of the perpetrator, who had initially hidden among the rocks. Some citizens tried to track down and detain the man, but had to back off when he threatened to carry a knife. When the carabinieri arrived, the witnesses provided valuable information about the identity and habits of the man, who was well known in the area. Thanks to this exemplary cooperation, the police were finally able to track down and arrest the fugitive behind some electrical cabins. A judge confirmed the arrest and ordered him to be remanded in prison.
