A 51-year-old man was arrested this morning in the province of Parma on suspicion of murdering his 74-year-old mother after months of abuse. The arrest warrant was preceded by 36 hours of uninterrupted investigation by the Carabinieri and the Parma public prosecutor's office.
The case came to light after the woman died on Monday afternoon, August 4, in the hospital in Parma as a result of a brain hemorrhage with signs of external violence. Her son, Indian citizen R. B., had called the emergency services in the morning and said that his mother had suffered a fainting spell. However, during the rescue at the home in Polesine Zibello, the medical staff noticed old and new injuries on the woman's body that did not match this description.
The investigation paints a picture of a family conflict characterized by violence. Neighbors reported frequent arguments and screams of pain coming from the apartment. The suspect, who apparently has an alcohol problem, is said to have regularly abused his mother and his partner. The victim, who had only come to Italy a few months ago, had repeatedly sided with her daughter-in-law and expressed her fear of returning to India.
The fatal incident is said to have occurred on August 2, when the son violently hit his mother on the head again. The public prosecutor's office is accusing him of murder resulting from systematic abuse and the killing of a close relative. The arrest was made partly due to the risk of absconding, as the man had tried to go into hiding after his mother's death.
