The Italian carabinieri have struck a major blow against organized drug trafficking in Calabria. In the dense forests of the Locride, near the village of Caulonia, investigators discovered a huge, professionally run marijuana plantation with more than two thousand cannabis plants ready for harvesting. The illegal cultivation area had been deliberately set up in the rough terrain to protect it from detection.
Drug factory in the open air
The plantation can be described as a veritable open-air drug factory. The perpetrators used state-of-the-art cultivation techniques and supplied the plants with water via a sophisticated and complex irrigation system. The size and level of organization indicate that an illegal agricultural operation had been set up here that was on the verge of flooding the drug market with an enormous amount of marijuana. The illegal area was discovered during a coordinated raid by the local Caulonia Carabinieri station and the specialized helicopter unit of the "Cacciatori Calabria".
Criminals use remote areas
The find once again underlines a well-known strategy of criminal networks: the use of inaccessible and rural areas for their lucrative business. The remoteness and dense vegetation of the Locride provide ideal conditions for concealing illegal activities such as drug cultivation. However, it is precisely in these areas that the Carabinieri concentrate their efforts. Thanks to a widespread presence and the deployment of special units such as the helicopter squadron from Vibo Valentia, the authorities have repeatedly succeeded in ensuring control even in the most remote corners and inflicting significant financial losses on organized crime. The current seizure is therefore not only a success in the fight against drugs, but also a clear signal of the state's presence in the region.
