A peaceful day on vacation took a disastrous turn for a family from Comiso in the Sicilian town of Caucana in the municipality of Santa Croce Camerina. Their two-year-old son lost his life in a tragic accident at their vacation home that morning. The boy drowned in an inflatable pool that had been placed on the veranda of the house.
A moment of carelessness
According to the initial findings of the carabinieri, who have started an investigation, the accident happened in an unobserved moment. The little boy, who had only recently celebrated his second birthday, must have wandered away from the adults unnoticed. It is assumed that he climbed up the small ladder to the pool and then fell into the water. When the family, including the grandmother who found the boy, noticed that he was missing, it was already too late. Despite their best efforts, the immediately alerted emergency services were only able to determine that the child had died. The family, who run a well-known oil mill in the region, were spending their summer vacation in the house.
The mayor of Santa Croce Camerina, Giuseppe Dimartino, was deeply shocked: "A tragedy that affects our entire community." As a sign of respect and mourning, the town council canceled all summer events planned for the evening.
