Dramatic summer in Italy's mountains: 83 fatalities in one month

The Italian Alps have recorded a record summer of fatal mountain accidents with 83 deaths in just one month. The mountain rescue service also blames the urge for spectacular social media images for the alarming development.

A shadow lies over the picturesque Italian Alps: between June 21 and July 23 of this year, 83 people lost their lives in mountain accidents and five more are missing. Maurizio Dellantonio, head of the national mountain and cave rescue service, confirmed these worrying statistics to the Italian media. With an average of almost three fatal accidents per day, it marks a sad record.

The reasons for the drastic increase in the number of accidents - they have risen by around 20 percent compared to previous years - are complex. Dellantonio particularly criticizes the often inadequate equipment and insufficient preparation of many mountaineers. Time and again, rescue teams have to rescue people who venture up challenging peaks in sneakers. One example is a 30-year-old who was surprised by the cold at an altitude of 3,600 meters and had to be rescued.

Another alarming factor is the increasing influence of social media. The urge to produce spectacular photos and videos for platforms such as Instagram or TikTok is tempting many to embark on dangerous tours without informing themselves about the actual weather conditions or the difficulty of the terrain. This pursuit of the "perfect selfie" has developed into a serious safety risk that is being monitored by mountain rescuers across the country.

The tragic outcome of summer 2025 is reflected in cases such as that of a German hiker who fell around 100 meters to her death in the Aosta Valley near the Colle della Lace.

In addition to the human tragedies, the often denied rescue costs are also a problem: Around one in two rescued people do not want to pay them.

In view of this development, the Italian authorities and rescue services are urging all mountain lovers to exercise the utmost caution, always equip themselves appropriately and assess their abilities realistically. The fascination of the mountains should never overshadow the awareness of the risks involved.
