A family vacation in Sicily ended in tragedy for a German tourist. A 38-year-old man from Rangsdorf near Berlin was hit by a car in the coastal town of Alcamo Marina in the afternoon and fatally injured. He died just a few hours later in a hospital in Palermo as a result of his serious injuries. The man was on the Italian Mediterranean island with his wife and two children.
Investigations into the cause of the accident are ongoing
According to initial findings by the local municipal police, the holidaymaker, M. K., was walking on the sidewalk of Via Apuzzo when a 30-year-old female driver from Alcamo lost control of her Fiat Panda for an as yet unexplained reason. The vehicle left the road, hit the pedestrian on the sidewalk and then collided with another parked car. The driver of the Panda suffered minor injuries and was also taken to hospital. The police have started an investigation to find out why the woman left the road.
A rescue helicopter was immediately alerted and took the critically injured tourist to the Civico Clinic in Palermo, but the doctors were unable to save his life. During the rescue and recovery work, there was considerable traffic congestion and long traffic jams in the popular seaside resort.
