Great white shark in the Adriatic: Rare return of a marine predator
A young great white shark was caught off the coast of Montenegro at a depth of around 115 meters. It was found about twelve kilometers off the coastal town of Bar. The fisherman who discovered the animal documented the catch with photos and position data before releasing it back into the sea. This was a significant contribution to the research and protection of this endangered species.
Such sightings are extremely rare. In the past 30 years, only two other specimens of great white sharks have been reported in Montenegrin waters. The current catch is therefore a remarkable event for marine biologists and conservationists. Analysis by a local marine research institute confirmed that it was a juvenile animal. This provides additional information on possible reproduction areas or the migratory behavior of the animals.
Great white sharks are considered native to the Mediterranean, but their presence has declined sharply. The Adriatic Sea is now only occasionally crossed by this species. Accordingly, the population in the Mediterranean is classified as "critically endangered". The most recent sighting in Montenegro is therefore of particular scientific relevance.
Significance for research and protective measures
Observing young white sharks can provide important information about their movement patterns and ecological requirements. Such findings are essential for targeted conservation measures. The case also shows that the behavior of fishermen plays a decisive role in the conservation of endangered species. Refraining from selling the animal in favor of documenting and releasing it is in line with international recommendations for species conservation.
Even though great white sharks have a feared image, attacks on humans in the Adriatic are extremely rare. The last known fatal incident was more than 15 years ago. Experts emphasize that the risk to bathers is minimal and panic reactions are unfounded.
The return of a great white shark to the Adriatic Sea is above all an indication of the need to better monitor marine ecosystems. The current incident could help to raise public awareness of the importance of protecting marine species and strengthen existing measures.

FAQ - Great white shark
How dangerous is the great white shark for swimmers in the Adriatic?
Attacks by great white sharks on humans are extremely rare in the Adriatic. The last known fatal incident was many years ago. Marine biologists emphasize that the risk for swimmers and divers is minimal.
Why do great white sharks appear in the Mediterranean?
The great white shark is a natural inhabitant of the Mediterranean, but is rarely seen there. It follows prey fish such as tuna and may use certain areas for breeding or as a migration route. Sightings in the Adriatic are rare, but not uncommon.
What should you do if you see a shark?
In the unlikely event of a sighting, you should remain calm and leave the water in an orderly fashion. As a rule, sharks move on as soon as they notice humans. Sightings should be reported to local authorities or marine research institutes to support scientific data.
