A massive heatwave is currently affecting large parts of the country. Temperatures above the 40 degree mark are causing health risks, overstretched infrastructure and a tense everyday life.
The highest warning level for heat stress is currently in force in numerous regions. South Tyrol, Apulia, Basilicata and Sicily are particularly affected, where temperatures are rising continuously. The critical threshold has already been exceeded in Bolzano. The heat has a noticeable impact on the population: in addition to circulatory problems, the risk of dehydration and heatstroke increases. Even healthy people are affected if they do not pay sufficient attention to hydration and rest.
The high-pressure system "Pluto" is responsible for the extreme weather conditions and has been bringing stable, hot air masses to Italy for several days. In combination with high humidity, this is exacerbating the situation, particularly in urban areas. Meteorologists expect the current heatwave to last until the beginning of July. Only then could thunderstorms in northern Italy provide a temporary cooling effect.
The health authorities are appealing to the population to protect vulnerable groups in particular, such as the elderly, children and the chronically ill. Increased fluid intake, avoiding heavy meals and wearing light clothing are recommended. Physical activity outdoors should be avoided or postponed until the early hours of the morning. The hot spell also has an impact on the energy supply and public life: Air conditioning systems are running at full speed and local administrations are setting up emergency call centers.
