After days of extreme heat, Sunday, July 6, 2025, brought a violent thunderstorm with heavy rain and storms over northern Italy. The area west of Milan was particularly affected, where the weather claimed the life of a 63-year-old woman.
The woman was with two companions, a 68-year-old woman and a 70-year-old man, in a wooded area near Robecchetto con Induno when a tree suddenly uprooted and fell on the group. The 63-year-old woman died at the scene of the accident, while the other two were taken to hospital with moderate injuries and are in a stable condition.
The fire department in the Milan area had already received around 50 emergency calls by Sunday evening, mainly due to uprooted trees, flooded cellars and posters torn down by strong gusts of wind. The civil protection authority in Florence also reported local damage caused by lightning and squalls.
Between Milan and Bologna, an explosion struck near Melegnano Flash into an Italo high-speed train on. The train broke down and there were delays of up to an hour.
The mayor of Milan, Giuseppe Sala, appealed for caution on social media, as further thunderstorms are expected.
The storm depression was triggered by the combination of a monsoon-like thunderstorm front in the north and the heat in the rest of Italy, where temperatures of around 30 °C were reached in many regions. A marked cooling of more than ten degrees was measured in the greater Milan area. There were also severe weather warnings in Veneto, Tuscany and Piedmont, some with an orange danger level.
