On July 5, 2025, Elon Musk officially announced the founding of the America Party on his social media platform X. He wants to create an alternative to the two traditional parties and break up the "Uniparty" of Republicans and Democrats.
The launch came immediately after the passage of the so-called "One Big Beautiful Bill", a comprehensive tax and budget policy that could increase the deficit by several trillion dollars, according to Musk. With a 4th of July X-poll, in which around 65 % of participants took part and spoke out in favor of his party formation, he invoked broad approval.
Musk explained that the America Party should "give Americans back their freedom" and gain influence in strategically important constituencies in particular. His plan is to target two to three seats in the Senate and eight to ten seats in the House of Representatives. He wants to use this to tip the scales and influence controversial legislation.
The move marks a clear break with Donald Trump. He had defended the legislative initiative and had already responded with clear threats against Musk, including the withdrawal of state funding for his company. Although Musk's companies have sufficient financial resources, political experts warn of the historically difficult terrain for new parties in the USA. Challenges such as complicated registration rules, bureaucratic hurdles and the dominant majority voting system should not be underestimated.
Analysts compare this step with the failed attempts of previous third parties, such as Theodore Roosevelt's candidacy in 1912 or Ross Perot's in 1992. Nevertheless, it remains unclear to what extent Musk has already officially registered his party and whether it can actually take part in elections.
