Provocation in the Baltic States: Moscow tests NATO's resolve
The Russian aircraft entered the NATO member's airspace without a flight plan, with transponders switched off and without radio contact, and stayed there for almost 12 minutes - a clear and dangerous maneuver. The Alliance's response was prompt: as part of NATO's mission to secure its eastern flank, Italian F-35 fighter jets took off to intercept the Russian aircraft and escort them out of Alliance territory. A NATO spokeswoman described the incident as "another example of Russia's reckless behavior", which at the same time demonstrates the Alliance's high level of responsiveness. The message is unmistakable: any attempt to test NATO's resolve will be met with a swift and robust response.
Brussels and Putin: a clear edge and unyielding rhetoric
Europe's response to the military provocation also takes place on an economic level. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the adoption of the 19th package of sanctions against Moscow and called on the member states to implement them quickly. "As the threats increase, so will our pressure," said von der Leyen. She said that it was time to "turn off the Russian gas taps". The new package primarily targets the Russian financial sector by targeting the MIR credit card system, cryptocurrency transactions and other banks.
While the West demonstrates unity and toughness, the Kremlin continues to send unyielding signals. President Vladimir Putin declared that although the war in Ukraine would end, Russia would "continue to expand" its armed forces to make them more modern and powerful - a clear rejection of any form of de-escalation.
