Scanno – Early in the morning, when the fog still hangs over the water and the first photographers are setting up their tripods, it becomes clear why this mountain village in Abruzzo is among the Italy's most beautiful places counts. The most important Scanno Attractions can be summed up in a single sentence: a heart-shaped lake, a black traditional costume found nowhere else, and an old town that Henri Cartier-Bresson and Mario Giacomelli made world-famous.

Scanno is located at an elevation of 1,050 meters in the upper Sagittario Valley, has fewer than 2,000 residents, and boasts two seals: Borghi più belli d'Italia (Italy's most beautiful villages) and the Bandiera Arancione from the Touring Club. In this guide, you'll get the 5 Highlights with prices, access via the spectacular gorge of the Gole del Sagittario and honest reviews—plus the best trattorias, places to stay, and the editorial team’s insider tip. Not a museum village, but a lively artisan village that’s best explored on foot.

How much do Scanno's attractions cost?

Not much—and that's the good news. Scanno thrives on its village atmosphere, and there's no admission fee: Through the Strolling through the Old Town, visiting the churches, and hiking the Sentiero del Cuore, is free. Admission is charged mainly at the lake and for the small local museum. Here's an overview:

  • Old Town, Alleys & Churches: free of charge
  • Sentiero del Cuore (Heart Viewpoint): Free · About 1 hour uphill each way
  • South Shore Lake Parking Lot: Starting at €1/hour or about €5/day · North Shore: partly free
  • Pedal boat or rowboat rentals: Starting at about 10 € (half an hour) · Summer only
  • Museo della Lana (Wool Museum): a few euros · small local museum
  • Free of charge: Town center, all churches, the lakefront, and hiking trails

If you just want to see the village and the lake, the park ticket is your only expense. For that real "wow" moment—the heart-shaped lake seen from above—you won't need a single cent, just a good pair of shoes.

Cocullo Snake Festival: The Festa dei Serpari in Abruzzo

August 2, 2026

On May 1, Cocullo carries a statue of a saint covered in live snakes through the streets: The Festa dei Serpari is one of Italy's oldest festivals. All the information you need about the schedule, how to get there, and accommodations...

What are the 5 must-see attractions in Scanno?

Scanno is small but bustling. These five highlights define the town—from its world-famous lake to the traditional black costume, which is seeking inclusion on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage.

1. Lake Scanno & the Sentiero del Cuore

The Lake Scanno is the largest natural lake in Abruzzo—formed when an ancient landslide from the Monte Genzana the valley of the Tasso spilled out. From below, a turquoise-blue mountain lake; from above, a little sensation: from a certain angle, its outline forms an almost perfect Heart. The path leads there Path of the Heart („Path of the Heart“), a shaded trail that climbs uphill for about an hour to the observation deck. There are two starting points: right by the lake (just before the large parking lot) or from the village via the Via della Pineta. At the top, next to the panoramic view, is the small hermitage Hermitage of Sant’Egidio. Honest assessment: The trail is easy, but it climbs steadily all the way—to complete the heart shape, you'll need clear visibility and some stamina, but the result is worth every drop of sweat.

2. The Medieval Old Town

The Town Center is a labyrinth of narrow alleys, stone stairways, and arched gateways that winds its way up a rocky outcrop. Typical features include the cemmouse, the steep outdoor staircases leading to the building entrances, and the old arches of the former city wall, such as the Arco della Croce and the Arch of Sant’Eustachio. Not just a single „must-have photo,“ but a place to get lost in: around every corner, a doorway, a balcony with flowers, a clothesline backlit by the sun. Tip: The light is most beautiful early in the morning or in the evening sun—and the alleys are the emptiest.

3. The Traditional Costume and Filigree Gold of Scanno

That's Scanno's real treasure. The Women's Traditional Costume – a heavy, dark robe with a turban-like headdress – has been worn for centuries; today, only a few older women still wear it in everyday life. Since 2022, proceedings have been underway to recognize it as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage to be recognized. This includes the famous gold jewelry: the Presentosa, a delicate star with two hearts in the center, which the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio immortalized in his 1894 novel. Traditionally, it served as a token of love before marriage. In the Goldsmith Workshops There, you can watch filigree art being created right before your eyes. Is it worth it?: Definitely—a look inside a workshop tells you more about Scanno than any church ever could.

4. The Churches in the Town Center

The most important church is Santa Maria della Valle Built in the Abruzzo Romanesque style, it has been remodeled many times over the centuries and features medieval frescoes. Scattered throughout the alleys are other small churches—including the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, whose staircase Cartier-Bresson chose as the setting for one of his most famous photographs. Admission is free, and the interior is simple. Classification: Not exactly an art sensation, but they’re great stops along your stroll and are usually pleasantly cool.

5. Scanno, the Village of Photographers

Hardly any other place in Italy has been photographed as often. Hilde Lotz-Bauer Scanno had already documented this as early as the 1930s, Henri Cartier-Bresson came in the early 1950s, Mario Giacomelli created his painting here in 1957 „The Boy from Scanno“ – today at MoMA in New York. Anyone who wanders through the village with their eyes wide open will immediately understand its charm: the interplay of light, stone, and tradition. You can delve deeper into the topic at the small Wool Museum, which is located in the old slaughterhouse and tells the story of the town's shepherding and wool-producing heritage. Tip: Take your time instead of setting goals—Scanno rewards strolling more than checking things off a list.

What other sights are worth seeing?

If you're staying longer, it's worth the A walk to the lake with the little one Church of Madonna del Lago, which is right on the water. The more athletic can continue climbing to the Hermitage of Sant’Egidio or take a ride on a pedal boat. In winter, the town transforms into a snow-covered postcard—perfect for a stroll through the snow-covered alleys. Even with its many museums, Scanno remains compact: In addition to the Wool Museum There are no large houses, and that's exactly what gives it its charm—here, the village itself is the museum.

How do you get to Scanno?

Scanno is off the beaten path—getting there is part of the experience, since the final leg of the journey takes you through the spectacular gorge of the Gole del Sagittario.

  • By airplane: The nearest airport is the Abruzzo Airport in Pescara (about 90 km). Rome-Fiumicino is about 190 km away. From either location, you'll need a rental car or a combination of train and bus.
  • By train: Scanno doesn't have a train station. You'll travel as far as Sulmona (with good connections from Rome and Pescara) and transfer there to the regional bus heading toward Scanno.
  • By car: From Rome or Pescara via the A25 to the exit Cocullo, then on the SS479 Via Anversa degli Abruzzi and through the Gole del Sagittario to Scanno. Winding, but spectacular.
  • Parking: Driving is not allowed in the narrow town center—please use the parking lots on the outskirts of town. There is a paid parking lot by the lake (south shore) and free parking spaces on the north shore.

Since you can explore the entire village on foot, you won't need a vehicle once you're there. Winter Tip: In heavy snow, the tunnel on the route from Cocullo is occasionally closed for safety reasons—check the conditions beforehand. By the way, a worthwhile stop along the way is Sulmona, the City of Sweet Confetti.

What should you definitely try in Scanno?

Scanno's cuisine is mountain cuisine: hearty, sweet, and proud of its shepherding tradition. The signature dish is the Pan dell’Orso („Bear Bread“), a soft almond-honey cake whose name comes from a legend about a bear that stole sweets from shepherds. In addition, there are the Scanno mostaccioli, chocolate-almond pastries with dark glaze, and—on the savory side—the cazzellitti, hand-shaped pasta made from Solina-Flour. If you like cheese, try the local pecorino and the curious black-skinned ricotta, whose rind oxidizes from white to gray to black as it matures. These include classic Abruzzese cheeses such as maccheroni alla chitarra, arrosticini (lamb skewers) and trout from the lake. And you need a robust Montepulciano d'Abruzzo.

When is the best time to visit Scanno?

In short: May, June, September and October are ideal—mild weather, clear views along the Sentiero del Cuore, and no crowds yet. The Summer (July/August) brings swimming at the lake, pedal boats, and crowded streets, especially around Ferragosto. The Autumn turns the surrounding forests red and gold—the most beautiful time of year for photographers. The Winter turns Scanno into a snow-covered fairy-tale setting, but caution is advised: heavy snow can cause the roads to freeze, and the tunnel from Cocullo may be closed. If you want to see the lake’s heart shape, it’s best to visit between April and October when the skies are clear.

What holidays and celebrations should you plan for?

Scanno's highlight of the year is Ju Catenacce: On August 14, on the eve of Ferragosto, a historic wedding procession in full traditional costume winds its way through the village—the bride and groom and their relatives lined up like a chain (hence the name in the local dialect). A unique spectacle that keeps the traditional costumes alive. Around mid-August, the village is understandably crowded; those seeking peace and quiet should avoid these days. Other events in 2026: the Cross-Triathlon XTERRA Lake Scanno (July 25), La Notte Nera featuring a village with the lights dimmed and a light show (August 17), the Food Festival Deguscanno (November 6) and the fiery Glory of St. Martin (November 10). During the Christmas season, there is also a live nativity play. Just a few kilometers away, the famous Cocullo Snake Festival.

What You Should Know About Scanno

To make sure your visit goes smoothly, here are the honest details that no glossy brochure will tell you:

  • Elevation & Weather: At 1,050 meters, it gets chilly in the evenings even in summer—be sure to pack a jacket, even in August.
  • Winter Access: Snow and ice can make the trip from Cocullo difficult; the tunnel may be closed if necessary. If in doubt, check the weather and road conditions.
  • Peace and quiet instead of hustle and bustle: Outside of the summer months, Scanno is very quiet—some shops and restaurants have reduced hours during that time. That’s part of its charm, but keep it in mind.
  • Tight Spaces & Steep Inclines: The Old Town consists of stairs and cobblestone streets—which can be difficult for strollers and people with limited mobility.
  • Parking in the Summer: On hot weekends and around Ferragosto, the parking lots by the lake fill up quickly—arrive early or park on the outskirts of town and walk.

Who should consider using Scanno?

Photography and culture enthusiasts You've come to the right place: Few villages offer so much light, texture, and living tradition in such a small area. Nature lovers and hikers love the lake, the Sentiero del Cuore, and the proximity to the national park. Foodies come for Pan dell’Orso, mountain cheese, and authentic trattoria cuisine. Couples will find what is arguably the most romantic setting in Abruzzo at the heart-shaped lake. Scanno is less suited for Partygoers and beach lovers – The town is too quiet and too far from the ocean for that.

What's going on in Scanno in the evening?

Honestly: Scanno isn't a nightlife destination, and that's a good thing. The evening activities center around the Piazza in the town center where you sit down for an aperitivo and enjoy the passeggiata observed. In the summer, life shifts to the lakeside, where bars and restaurants stay open late into the evening. If you're looking for a real nightlife scene, you're better off in Sulmona or on the coast—in Scanno, the starry sky above the mountains is the main attraction.

Combine a visit to Scanno with Sulmona, Cocullo, and Villalago

Scanno is the perfect base for exploring the heart of Abruzzo. On the way there, you'll find Sulmona, home of the colorful Confetti and Ovid's birthplace—perfect for a half-day trip. Just a few kilometers further on, Cocullo its unique Snake Festival every May 1. On the way between the two lies Villalago with the emerald-green Lake San Domenico and his hermitage carved into the rock—also one of the most beautiful places in Italy. Those who want more nature can immerse themselves directly in the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park one. And if, after the mountains, the sea beckons you: To the Costa dei Trabocchi, with its fishing platforms and the Via Verde It takes about two hours to drive there from Scanno.

Editor's Insider Tip

Don't hike the Sentiero del Cuore at noon; instead, hike it in the late afternoon—and start from the village via the Via della Pineta rather than from the lake. That way, first, you’ll have the shaded ascent behind you before the sun gets low, and second, the warm evening light will fall directly on the water’s surface, making the heart shape stand out most clearly. If you wait for the sunset at the Eremo di Sant’Egidio and head back with a headlamp, you’ll have the most famous lake in Abruzzo almost all to yourself.

Our Conclusion: Why Scanno Is More Than Just a Heart-Shaped Lake

Scanno is one of those places you don’t just check off a list—you experience it. The heart-shaped lake is the main attraction, but the real charm lies in the interplay of elements: a historic center that looks like something out of a postcard, traditional black folk costumes on the way to a World Heritage Site, and a goldsmithing tradition that would have long since died out elsewhere.

When it comes to prices, Scanno is surprisingly unpretentious—the village, churches, and hiking trails are free, and food and lodging are affordable. The biggest expense is the trip through the Gole del Sagittario, but it’s well worth the money in terms of travel time and the thrill. If you budget for two expenses—a parking ticket and a good dinner—you’ve got almost everything covered.

Our advice: Stay at least one night so you can experience the village without day-trippers, and combine your visit with Sulmona and the national park—and don't forget to pack your camera. Scanno is a place that will keep you coming back for more.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About Scanno

How do you get from the airport to downtown Scanno?

It’s about 90 kilometers from Aeroporto d’Abruzzo in Pescara: the fastest way is by rental car via the A25 to Cocullo and then on the SS479 (just over an hour). If you don’t have a car, take the train or bus to Sulmona and transfer there to the regional bus to Scanno.

Why is Lake Scanno heart-shaped?

It's not the lake itself—its heart shape is only visible from a certain vantage point above the shore. The Sentiero del Cuore leads uphill to that very vantage point in about an hour.

How much does the Sentiero del Cuore in Scanno cost?

Nothing. The hiking trail is free; you only pay for the parking ticket at the lake (starting at 1 euro per hour or about 5 euros per day on the south shore).

What is Scanno famous for?

For three things: the heart-shaped Lago di Scanno, the centuries-old traditional women’s costume with its filigree gold jewelry (Presentosa), and its role as the „village of photographers“ —Cartier-Bresson and Giacomelli took world-famous photographs here.

When is Ju Catenacce taking place?

The historic wedding procession in traditional costume takes place every year on August 14, the eve of Ferragosto. Scanno is particularly crowded during this time.

Is Scanno worth visiting in the winter, too?

Yes, the town looks like something out of a fairy tale when it's covered in snow. However, the roads can become icy, and the tunnel from Cocullo may be closed during heavy snowfall—be sure to check the weather and road conditions before you travel.

How much time should you set aside for Scanno?

One day is enough to explore the village and the lake. If you want to go hiking, explore the surrounding area, and stay overnight, you’ll get to experience Scanno without the day-trippers—in that case, two to three days are ideal.
