Grigor Dimitrov was sensationally leading 6:3 and 7:5 sets, even holding his serve at 2:2, when he suddenly injured his right pectoral muscle and had to retire after a medical timeout. The emotionally charged scene, in which Dimitrov left the court in tears, was met with great sympathy from the crowd.
Jannik Sinner, who himself complained of pain in his right elbow during the match and took a medical break, immediately showed his sympathy and comforted his beaten opponent. In his subsequent statement, he emphasized that he did not feel like a winner and wished his friend Dimitrov a speedy recovery.
In addition to Dimitrov's absence, Sinner also signaled that his elbow injury should be taken seriously. He announced that he would undergo an MRI scan the following day to clarify the extent of the possible injury.
Despite the unfortunate victory, Sinner advances to the last eight, where he will face the American Ben Shelton, the number 10 seed. At the same time, the Italian Cobolli and other favorites, Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz, reached the quarter-finals.
