New York - It was a gesture that went around the world and caused outrage, but now it has come to a heart-warming end thanks to the great efforts of the protagonist. Polish tennis player Kamil Majchrzak has tracked down the little boy whose cap was stolen by an adult man after his sensational victory at the US Open. "We have found him! It's all good now," the 29-year-old announced just a few hours after his public appeal for help.
The incident occurred on Thursday after Majchrzak's biggest career win, a five-set victory over No. 9 seed Karen Khachanov. When the Pole wanted to throw his cap into the crowd as a souvenir, he aimed it at a young boy. However, a viral video showed how a man standing next to the child grabbed it in a flash, snatched the cap and put it in his pocket, while the boy was left stunned. The clip caused a storm of indignation on the internet.
A champion with a big heart
Majchrzak, who had not noticed the incident himself at the moment, reacted immediately when he heard about it. Via Instagram, he asked his followers for help in finding the boy and promised to have enough new caps for him. The "power of the internet", as he called it, ensured a quick resolution. In the meantime, the case had taken on bizarre proportions when a fake defense of the cap thief appeared online, which was supposed to come from a lawyer, who immediately denied this and took legal action.
The episode rounds off a dramatic 24 hours for the Polish tennis star. He had previously shown an incredible fighting performance on court, fending off five match points and defeating Khachanov after four and a half hours. "This is the biggest victory of my career," he said afterwards. He will now face Swiss qualifier Leandro Riedi in the third round and has the chance to reach the last 16 of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.
