ROME - With the next budget law, the Italian government under Giorgia Meloni wants to send a clear signal for the middle class. After previous measures had concentrated primarily on lower and middle incomes, it was now time to focus on the income bracket up to 50,000 euros. "With the few resources available, we need to understand how we can use them most effectively," explained the Prime Minister. Further consultations are to take place in the coming hours in order to define concrete measures.
Contribution of the banks and sharp political tones
In order to raise the necessary funds, Meloni once again brought a contribution from the banking sector into play. "We already did this last year," said the head of government. She emphasized that she had no punitive intentions towards the financial system, which is an important asset of the nation. However, in view of the favorable economic conditions for the institutions, help could be requested for those Italians who still need support. Politically, Meloni lashed out at the opposition and supported the theory that the left was trying to "come to power by legal means" if elections were not successful.
Charges of genocide and criticism of protests
The Prime Minister's revelation that she, together with Defense Minister Guido Crosetto and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, had been charged with "aiding and abetting genocide" in connection with the situation in Gaza by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague caused a stir. Meloni called the process, which was initiated by the organization "Global Movement To Gaza Italia", unprecedented in history. It was made clear from The Hague that although anyone can file such a report, it has no official value until the public prosecutor makes a decision - which has not happened. In the context of the recent demonstrations in Italy, Meloni spoke of "premeditated violence" and criticized the fact that people who cheer on Hamas' terror were allowed to lead demonstrations.
