At an elevation of about 1,200 meters, nestled in the mountains of Vallecamonica, you’ll swing your club here with a view of mountain peaks instead of rows of palm trees: The Montecampione Golf Club is a 9-hole executive course with a par of 30 and a length of about 1,290 meters—a compact mountain course high above the town of Artogne in the province of Brescia.

Montecampione is a ski resort in the winter—and in the summer, the Alpiaz plain transforms into a breezy little golf course. The course was built in 1996 and is intentionally kept short: ideal for a few relaxing holes among the alpine meadows, without having to set aside an entire day.

Since the course is so high up, you'll mainly play here in the height of summer—the peak season runs from mid-June to mid-September. If you're planning your Golf Vacations in Lombardy If you're looking for something other than the big championship-level courses, Montecampione is a genuine, down-to-earth option.

The Course: 9 short holes over 1,200 meters

The Montecampione Golf Club is designed as an executive course—that is, nine relatively short holes, many par 3s, and one or two short par 4s, for a total of par 30 over the nine holes. At around 1,290 meters from the white tees and 1,126 meters from the red tees, the course is compact yet challenging: You won’t need a wide range of long woods here, but rather a clean short game and a good sense of elevation changes. If you want to play a full round, you’ll play the nine holes twice, for a total of par 60.

Because the course on the Alpiaz Plateau is located at an elevation of about 1,200 meters, the terrain is undulating and surrounded by mountain meadows. The thinner air at this altitude allows the ball to travel a bit farther than it would at lower elevations—a nice bonus for anyone who doesn’t usually hit the longest shots. Walking is permitted, and you can rent a trolley or cart on site. To warm up, there’s a driving range, a putting green, and a pitching and chipping area.

Who designed the Montecampione Golf Club?

To be honest, there is no official record of a prominent architect’s name associated with Montecampione. The course was built in 1996 as part of the expansion of the Montecampione vacation resort and was designed as a compact executive course adapted to the alpine terrain—not as a large signature course by a star designer, but as a practical summer offering for guests of the mountain resort. That’s exactly what gives it its charm: the course doesn’t take itself too seriously and blends into the alpine landscape rather than reshaping it. If you’re interested in the exact history of its design, it’s best to ask directly at the clubhouse.

Amenities: Driving range, pool, and mountain restaurant

For a small mountain course, the facilities are surprisingly comprehensive. For practice, you have access to a driving range, a putting green, a pitching/chipping area, a practice bunker, and a practice hole. You can rent clubs, trolleys, and golf carts, and a golf instructor is on site—perfect if you want to squeeze in a trial lesson during your mountain vacation. After your round, there’s a bar and restaurant, and since the club is part of the Montecampione resort, recreational amenities like a swimming pool are also available on-site. The course is open to the public, so you don’t have to be a member to play.

Getting There and the Best Time to Visit

Montecampione is located in Val Camonica, northeast of Brescia. From the A4 highway (take the exit toward Vallecamonica), follow the SS42 into the valley as far as Artogne, and from there, drive up the winding mountain road to Montecampione—allow a little extra time for the final climb; the switchbacks take some getting used to. Depending on traffic, it takes just over an hour to get there from Brescia and about two hours from Milan.

Given its altitude, the best time to visit is almost a given: The course is open exclusively in the summer, with the peak season running from mid-June to mid-September. In midsummer, temperatures at 1,200 meters are pleasantly mild, while it can be stiflingly hot down in the valley—a compelling reason to play a round up here. Outside of these months, Montecampione operates as a ski resort during the winter.

Who would benefit from joining the Montecampione Golf Club?

Montecampione is a great choice for anyone looking to combine golf with a mountain vacation: for families looking for a relaxing summer day in the alpine pastures, for beginners and those returning to the game—who’ll find the pressure eased by a par-30 executive course with a low green fee of around 20 euros—and for experienced players who simply want to play a few casual holes with a view between hikes and a dip in the lake. Those looking to sharpen their short game will also be in good hands on the many par-3 holes.

The course is less suitable if you’re looking for a long championship round with 6,000 meters and 18 varied holes—Montecampione is too compact and too seasonal for that. If that’s important to you, it’s better to combine this mountain course with one of the larger courses on the plains to create a varied Golf in Italy-Trip.
