Imagine standing at the first tee at an elevation of 1,225 meters, with nine par-33 holes ahead of you, and all around you the 3,000-meter peaks of the Stelvio National Park soaring into the sky: This is the Bormio Golf Club in Valtellina, one of the highest-altitude mountain courses in Lombardy.

The course is located on Via Giustizia on the outskirts of the spa town of Bormio, less than a ten-minute walk from the famous thermal baths and the historic old town. At about 2,160 meters per round, you’ll play across undulating terrain, past water hazards, and with a view all the way up to the ski slope at the Stelvio Pass. The course was designed by Mario Verdieri from St. Moritz and opened in 1991.

Because the season up here is short—from April to early November—you'll play in crisp, cool mountain air that carries every ball a little farther. When you Golf Vacations in Lombardy If you want to combine mountains, hot springs, and legendary Alpine passes, Bormio is a genuine, no-fuss destination.

The Course: Nine Mountain Holes Between Water and Panoramic Views

The Bormio Golf Club is a 9-hole course with a par of 33, which you play twice for a full round (par 66). The nine holes consist of six par 4s and three par 3s—compact, but anything but boring. The total distance for the round is about 2,160 meters; for the 18-hole scoring, the distance is approximately 4,324 meters from the men’s yellow tees and 3,892 meters from the women’s red tees.

The terrain is undulating and typically alpine: narrow, gently undulating fairways, several water hazards, and mountains constantly in view. The signature hole is No. 8, a par 4 measuring over 300 meters, which offers a direct view of the ski slope at the Stelvio Pass. At an elevation of 1,225 meters, the ball travels noticeably farther in the thin mountain air—feel free to add a few extra meters to your estimate for every shot.

Who designed the Bormio Golf Club?

The course was designed by Mario Verdieri, a golf architect from nearby St. Moritz in the Engadin—someone who has firsthand experience building mountain courses. The course opened in 1991, and the club itself has been in existence since 1989. Instead of moving mountains, Verdieri adapted the nine holes closely to the natural topography of the valley floor: Bormio’s streams and hillsides have remained part of the course. The result is an authentic, easy-to-play mountain course that does without artificial drama yet never feels flat on any hole.

Practice Facility, Golf School, and Refreshments

Despite having just nine holes, the practice facility is surprisingly well-equipped. The driving range features covered tees (11 to 15, depending on how you count them, two of which are reserved for lessons), along with a nine-hole putting green, a pitching and chipping area, and a practice bunker. Anyone looking to get started or refine their swing can book individual or group lessons with Pro Jorge Daniel Tudino.

After your round, there’s a bar and restaurant with a terrace, a pro shop, locker rooms, and a bag storage area. You can rent clubs, carts, and golf cars right on site—which is convenient if you’re coming straight from a hiking vacation with light luggage. It’s open daily, and during peak season, it stays open into the evening.

Getting There and the Best Time to Visit

Bormio is located in the upper Valtellina, in the far north of Lombardy near the Swiss and South Tyrolean borders. From Milan, it’s about a 200-kilometer trip via Lecco and Tirano—take the train to Tirano and then continue by bus. From South Tyrol, in the summer you can reach Bormio via the legendary Stelvio Pass or the Gavia Pass—two Alpine roads that are worth the trip on their own. The site on Via Giustizia is within walking distance of the town center, and parking is available.

The best time to visit is midsummer: From July through August, it’s pleasantly warm even at 1,225 meters, though that’s also when green fees are at their highest. During the off-peak months of April, June, September, and October, you can play for less and enjoy a quieter experience. The course is closed from early November through late March—and let’s be honest: Bormio is strictly a summer destination.

Who would enjoy the Bormio Golf Club?

Bormio is a great choice for anyone who wants to combine golf with the mountains: for those who enjoy a quick 9-hole round, for beginners and families, and for hikers and spa guests who want to tee off in between activities. With green fees starting at around 30 euros, the course is also pleasantly affordable. And those traveling from South Tyrol or Switzerland can combine their round of golf with a drive over one of the major Alpine passes.

Bormio isn't the best choice if you're looking for a long, flat 18-hole championship course of tournament length or if you want to play in the winter—the mountain course is too compact and too seasonal for that. But if you appreciate the mountain air, sweeping views, and an uncomplicated course, this is the perfect spot for you. You can find more destinations in our overview of Golf in Italy.
