Treviso - A shocking case of neglect or tragic carelessness is currently occupying the authorities in the province of Treviso. A ten-month-old toddler accidentally ate a cookie containing hashish residue in his parents' home. The incident, which occurred at the beginning of December and has now come to light, triggered a large-scale medical rescue operation. The girl showed clear symptoms of severe poisoning shortly after eating it, including pronounced drowsiness and general muscle weakness.
Fighting for survival in the intensive care unit
It was not until the evening that the worried parents brought the child to the emergency room at Ca‘ Foncello Hospital. The attending doctors immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation: After initial examinations, the baby was transferred to the intensive care unit for the first night, as his condition was critical. According to medical reports, only the promptness of the treatment administered saved the girl's life. After stabilization, the little patient was transferred to the paediatric ward, where her condition gradually improved over the following days until she was finally out of danger.
Authorities check home environment
The hospital management of Ulss 2 immediately reported the incident to the responsible judicial authority. As a result, both the social services and an interprovincial institution for the protection of minors from abuse were activated. A plan for a so-called „protected release“ was drawn up in a specially convened specialist committee to ensure that the child returned to a safe environment.
Despite these precautionary measures taken by the authorities, however, the parents decided to discharge the child from hospital on their own after a ten-day stay in hospital, against the original advice of the experts. The investigation into the exact circumstances of the incident and the responsibility of the parents/guardians is ongoing, while the child's welfare remains under observation by the authorities.
