Treviso - A tragic event shook the municipality of Guia di Valdobbiadene in the province of Treviso on Wednesday, January 14. 56-year-old Attilio Frare, a passionate collector of objects from the history of war, died at around 13:00 when an unexploded bomb from the First World War exploded in his hands. The fatal detonation occurred in a tool shed where the victim was storing his finds.
Deadly passion for historical relics
According to initial findings by the police, the man had found the war relic illegally and transported it to his private residence. Frare, who had already been reported to the police in the past, was handling the explosive device when it suddenly went off. The force of the explosion was so massive that any help for the 56-year-old was too late.
Inside the shed, the alerted officers later discovered further dangerous remains from the First World War. The fact that a Treviso unexploded bomb can still have such destructive power even after more than a hundred years in the ground is a source of great horror among the population.
Large-scale deployment of emergency services and specialists
Immediately after the emergency call, a massive rescue operation was launched. The fire department and teams from the Suem 118 emergency medical service were deployed to the scene of the accident with ambulances, an ambulance and a rescue helicopter. The paramedics attended to other people at the scene who had witnessed the explosion. It is not yet clear whether anyone other than the fatality has been injured.
Secured by bomb disposal experts
Bomb disposal specialists from the Carabinieri, the so-called „Artificieri“, were called in to clear the site for the investigation. Their task was to secure the site of the accident and the other relics stored there. The experts are now investigating the origin of the explosive device and checking the safety of the other finds in order to rule out any danger to the neighborhood.
