US President Donald Trump has confirmed that his recent phone call with Vladimir Putin did not lead to any rapprochement in the Ukraine war. The two heads of state spoke for around an hour, but Trump subsequently stated that there had been no progress, neither towards a ceasefire nor in negotiations on a peace settlement.
Despite the deadlock, Trump emphasized that the United States wants to continue to support Ukraine with weapons. He emphasized that the aid for Kiev is necessary, even though there have recently been increasing indications that the US arms depots are noticeably under strain. In recent weeks, there has been repeated speculation about possible delivery stops or delays to important systems such as air defense missiles.
The Kremlin remains firm - Trump plans talks with Zelenskyi
The Russian side described the phone call as "constructive, but without tangible results". Putin once again made it clear that Russia would not give up its goals in Ukraine. Although the conversation is said to have also covered topics such as the situation in Syria and the Middle East, Ukraine remained the dominant theme.
Trump also announced his intention to speak with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the near future. This is also likely to be about future support for Kiev, particularly in light of the debate about the resilience of American weapons stocks. The military situation in Ukraine remains tense, while Russia continues to report territorial gains despite heavy losses.
Trump and Putin parted ways without any concrete agreements. The war in Ukraine thus remains deadlocked. At the same time, Washington is maintaining its support for Kiev - despite growing concerns about its own military resources.
