However, temporary instability is still to be expected this week. However, from May 25, the Azores High will prevail, bringing warm and dry air masses from the Atlantic with it. A brief change in position due to a cold air front from the northeast around May 29 could cause isolated thunderstorms in some regions. The area of high pressure will then establish itself with mild, stable weather.
Weather outlook until June 1
The Azores High is set to settle over the Mediterranean at the weekend. In northern Italy, meteorologists expect temperatures around 22-23 °C. In the central regions, temperatures of around 24-25 °C are expected, and up to 26 °C in Sardinia. After this brief intermittent high and possible showers around the turn of the month, it will be up to 30 °C in the Po Valley and parts of central Italy from June 1, and up to 32 °C on the larger islands.
For the Pentecost weekend (June 8) the forecast is summery with sunny, stable weather conditions and highs of around 30 °C in the Po Valley and up to 32 °C in Sicily and Sardinia. The first warm days of swimming by the sea are likely.
Classification of printing systems and possible developments
Meteorologists distinguish between the milder Azores High over the Atlantic and the hotter African High Pressure Area. The Azores High brings bright weather with moderate temperatures and better air quality. It acts as a protective cover against disturbances from the Atlantic. However, its presence is often unstable, meaning that periods of cold air are possible. Such a disrupted rhythm can be expected as early as May 29, which could lead to local thunderstorms.
With the start of the meteorological summer on June 1, the high pressure system comes more to the fore. At the same time, there is a risk that the African high pressure system will join in. This brings with it extreme heat and increasing humidity. Some weather models are already suggesting that a hot phase with temperatures of up to 32-35 °C could set in after the Azores high, especially in the center and south as well as on the islands.
The picture shows the weather between two systems that will influence the coming days. This is about:
- an initially stable phase with the Azores High, which ensures sunshine and warmer weather, and
- possible intermediate instability towards the end of May with thunderstorms in the north.
- From June 1-2, there is a transition to midsummer conditions with temperatures of up to 32 °C, sometimes even higher, as the influence from North Africa increases.
The next few days will decide how the summer weather develops in Italy. Although the stable Azores High will initially ensure bright hours, the emerging influence of Siberian air masses and the African High could make summer noticeably more intense.
