You're standing at the espresso bar, sipping your cappuccino on the go—and paying the €1.20 with a quick tap on your phone. That's how easy paying is in Italy these days. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere, contactless payments via card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay are standard. Still, there are a few things you should know: For small trattorias, markets, and tobacco Do you need Cash, you pay always in euros (never in dollars), and you'd better take a Card with no international fees American Express isn't accepted everywhere. Here's a complete overview.

Note for travelers to the U.S.: Prices and fees are in U.S. dollars (euros in parentheses), with an exchange rate of approximately 1.14 $ per euro (as of July 2026). Card terms and annual fees are subject to change—check the current terms with your provider.

Paying in Italy at a Glance

  • Visa & Mastercard: Accepted almost everywhere; by law, merchants are required to accept cards
  • Contactless is the standard: Tap, Apple Pay, and Google Pay work almost everywhere (up to €50 without a PIN)
  • American Express: only in larger hotels, restaurants, and tourist shops
  • Bring cash with you: for markets, small trattorias, tobacco, Restrooms and Tips
  • Always pay in euros: „In dollars“ (DCC) is more expensive—decline this option at the terminal and at the ATM
  • Card with no international fees: Earns 3 % per payment (Chase Sapphire, Capital One, etc.)
  • ATM Instead of a Currency Exchange: Withdraw cash at ATMs; avoid blue Euronet ATMs

Are credit cards accepted in Italy?

Yes, and they're very reliable. Italian retailers are legally required to accept electronic payments – from large department stores to small bars. Visa and Mastercard They work practically anywhere that accepts cards. American Express It's accepted at larger hotels, restaurants, and tourist shops, but often not at small stores—so never carry it as your only card. Discover is rarely there.

Everyday life today is largely digital: In 2025, there were about Nine out of ten in-store card payments are contactless. Even so, Italy is still more cash-oriented than the EU average—a good half of all in-store payments are still made in cash. For you, that means: use a card for almost everything, and cash for small purchases.

Contactless Payments with Tap, Apple Pay, and Google Pay

Contactless payment is the norm in Italy. Anywhere you Wave symbol When you see it at the terminal, you can use your card, your iPhone (Apple Pay) or your Android (Google Pay) Just tap it. This works at cash registers, in bars, in taxis, and even at many vending machines.

There's one thing you should know: The The contactless payment limit is €50 (about 57 $) per payment. Below that, you just tap; above that, the terminal asks for your PIN – even when paying contactlessly. With Apple Pay or Google Pay, this step is often unnecessary because your phone unlocks using Face ID or your fingerprint. So it’s best to add your cards to your phone’s Wallet before you travel.

The Chip-and-PIN Trap at ATMs

Here's the most common pitfall for travelers to the U.S.: Many American cards are Chip & Signature instead of Chip & PIN. At a staffed checkout, it doesn't matter—you either sign or use contactless payment. At unattended vending machines However, if they require a PIN, your card may not work: at Rail ticket vending machines, toll booths, unattended gas stations, and parking meter machines.

The solution is simple: Set up a PIN for your credit card before you travel (Check with your bank.) That way, you'll be able to use ATMs as well. Cash is a good backup option—and at toll booths, you can often choose a lane with an attendant.

Cash—When You Really Need It

You can't get by in Italy without any cash at all. In these situations, cash is often the only option—or the better one:

  • Small trattorias, bars, and cafés – Some places only accept cards for purchases above a certain minimum amount
  • Weekly markets and street stalls – Fruit, cheese, souvenirs
  • Tabacchi (Tobacco shops) for tickets, stamps, and parking tickets
  • Public Restrooms (often €0.50–1) and tips
  • Some Taxis outside the major cities

As a rule of thumb, you have 50–100 $ (45–90 €) in small bills and coins Keep that in mind. Large 50-euro bills aren't popular at small stands—it's better to withdraw smaller amounts more often.

Withdrawing Money from an ATM

You can withdraw cash in Italy at ATM – that's what ATMs are called here. Use them whenever possible ATMs at actual banks (e.g., UniCredit, Intesa Sanpaolo) instead of the flashy blue Euronet kiosks or currency exchange offices: These places lure you in with the promise of convenience, but offer lousy exchange rates and push expensive conversion fees on you.

Two rules will save you money: First, I reject the conversion „to dollars“ and always select euros (more on that in a moment). Second, keep in mind that many ATMs only allow about 250 € (285 $) charge a fee for some transactions. The best way to do this is to combine your no-fee credit card for payments with a A debit card that reimburses ATM fees worldwide (such as Charles Schwab) for withdrawals.

DCC: Always pay in euros, never in dollars

This one rule will save you money. If a terminal or ATM asks you whether you „in euros“ or „in U.S. dollars“ (in your local currency) If you want to pay, select always euros. Payment in dollars is called Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) and sounds convenient—but in reality, the merchant or ATM converts the currency at an unfavorable exchange rate and adds a hidden fee.

Your own bank almost always offers better exchange rates. The surcharge for DCC can easily amount to 3–7 %. So: Whenever you’re asked about the currency, be consistent „Euro“/„without conversion“ Tap—at the register or at the ATM.

The Best U.S. Credit Cards for Italy

The most important feature is No foreign transaction fee (Foreign transaction fee) – otherwise, you'll pay an extra 3 % on each transaction. These cards are popular with travelers to the U.S. and don't charge foreign currency fees:

MapAnnual feeAdvantage
Chase Sapphire Preferred95 $3x Restaurant, 2x Travel, no foreign transaction fee, travel insurance
Chase Sapphire ReserveHigh (including 300 $ travel credits)3 trips worldwide, comprehensive travel and evacuation coverage
Capital One Venture X~395 $2x points on everything, lounge access, no foreign transaction fees
Capital One Quicksilver0 $1.5 % Cashback everywhere, no foreign transaction fees
Charles Schwab Debit (Checking)0 $Withdraw cash worldwide without fees; ATM fees are reimbursed

A practical combination is one consisting of a no-fee credit card for payment and a reloadable debit card for takeoff. Also, take a Second card as a backup and store them separately.

Tips, Coperto, and the Bill

When it comes to paying at a restaurant, Italy works differently than the U.S. A No one expects a tip of 15–20 %. It is customary to pay the amount to round up or to tip a few euros for good service—and preferably in cash, because the card terminal often doesn't have a tip field.

Instead of a tip, you'll often find the coperto – a fixed cover charge per person (usually 2–3 $ / 2–3 €) for bread and service. This is standard practice and not a scam. The bill (the bill) isn't automatically included in Italy; you have to ask for it. In tourist areas, it's a good idea to check the prices before you order.

Pay Safely and Avoid Fraud

Paying with a card in Italy is safe—but it doesn't hurt to follow a few best practices. Cover the PIN entry and I prefer to use ATMs inside or outside bank branches to withdraw cash. At ATMs and gas pumps, watch out for loose or unusual attachments (Skimming). Ideally, don't let your card out of your sight at the restaurant—the mobile terminal is usually brought to your table anyway.

Enable the Push Notifications your banking app, and you'll see every transaction right away. Use a Second card separate Keep a spare in case one gets lost or blocked, and make a note of your bank’s hotline number for reporting lost or stolen cards. Contactless payments are considered very secure; you don’t necessarily need expensive „RFID-blocking sleeves.“.

Quick Tip: Paying with Ease in Italy

Take one Visa or Mastercard with no foreign transaction fees, save them to your phone for contactless payments, and just to be safe, set up a PIN and I always have something Cash There for the little things. Pay consistently in euros, on ATM instead of at currency exchange offices—and just like that, you’ll be paying in Italy as easily as a local.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About Paying by Credit Card in Italy

Are U.S. credit cards accepted in Italy?

Yes. Visa and Mastercard are accepted almost everywhere; merchants are even required by law to accept them. American Express is accepted only at larger hotels, restaurants, and tourist shops, and Discover is rarely accepted. Use a Visa or Mastercard as your primary card.

Should I pay in euros or dollars in Italy?

Always pay in euros. If a terminal or ATM offers payment „in U.S. dollars“ (dynamic currency conversion), the merchant will convert the amount at an unfavorable exchange rate and charge a surcharge of up to 7 %. Your own bank offers a better rate—so always choose euros.

Do I still need cash in Italy?

Yes, a little. About half of all payments are still made in cash. You'll need cash for small trattorias, markets, tobacco shops, restrooms, and tips. 50–100 $ in small bills is a good amount to have on hand.

Do Apple Pay and Google Pay work in Italy?

Yes, contactless payments via Apple Pay or Google Pay are standard and work at almost all terminals with the wave symbol. For amounts up to €50, you don't need a PIN; your phone authorizes the payment using Face ID or your fingerprint.

Why is my U.S. card being declined at the ATM?

Many U.S. cards use "chip and signature" instead of "chip and PIN." At unmanned machines (train tickets, tolls, gas stations, parking meters), not having a PIN can be a problem. Set up a PIN for your card before you travel and make sure you have some cash on hand.

Where can I withdraw money in Italy for the lowest fee?

Use ATMs at actual banks (Bancomat), not the blue Euronet ATMs or currency exchange offices. Decline the option to convert to dollars and select euros instead. A debit card that reimburses ATM fees (e.g., Charles Schwab) can save you even more.

How much should you tip when paying by card in Italy?

Significantly less than in the U.S. No one expects 15–20 %; it’s customary to round up or add a few extra euros for good service, preferably in cash. The “coperto” on the bill is a fixed table service charge, not a tip.
