Naples Attractions: 7 Highlights You Can't Miss

July 21, 2026

From the Veiled Christ to 40 meters beneath the city: Naples’ highlights, including prices, hours, and honest recommendations—plus the best neighborhoods to stay in and the pizza that’s worth every...

What are the 7 must-see attractions on Procida?

The short answer: Marina Corricella, Terra Murata with the Palazzo d’Avalos and the thousand-year-old abbey are must-sees—the rest depends on whether you're looking for beaches, nature, or scenic views. You can reach all seven places on foot or by island bus.

1. Marina Corricella: Italy's most beautiful fishing village?

The island's oldest fishing village was founded in 17th century and still looks today just as it did back then: Pastel-colored houses are stacked like an amphitheater above the harbor, connected by arches, outdoor staircases, and vaults. Cars? There aren't any here—the Corricella You can only reach it on foot via stairways like the Gradinata Scura or by boat.

Down at the pier, fishing boats and a handful of restaurants line the waterfront; the piazzetta is named Massimo Troisi Square – a tribute to the lead actor of Il Postino, who filmed here in 1994. Also The Talented Mr. Ripley made use of the alleys of the Corricella as a backdrop. Honest assessment: At lunchtime, day-trippers crowd through the town, but before 9 a.m. and after 6 p.m., you’ll have the postcard-perfect view almost all to yourself.

2. Terra Murata and Palazzo d’Avalos: Fortress, Prison, Viewing Balcony

At the highest point on the island – 91 meters Above the sea lies the „walled village“: the medieval rock-hewn village where the people of Procida took refuge from pirate raids. The climb from the Marina Grande takes a good half hour and is worth it just for the Belvedere dei Cannoni: From the old cannon terrace, you look straight down at the colorful Corricella down—the island's most famous photo spot.

The massive Palazzo d’Avalos Built in 1563, it was first a cardinal’s residence, then a Bourbon palace—and from 1830 to 1988, a prison. The guided tour through the cell blocks and courtyards with ocean views is both unsettling and fascinating: 13 €, Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m.; reservations must be made at least two days in advance. Plan your weekend accordingly—the Palazzo is closed during the week.

3. Abbazia San Michele Arcangelo: 1,000 Years of the Island's History

The Benedictine Abbey on the outskirts of the Terra Murata was Founded in 1026 – So in 2026, it will celebrate its millennium, and the island will mark the anniversary year with special events. The Archangel Michael is Procida’s patron saint; his gold-and-silver statue, dating from 1727, is carried in processions across the island twice a year.

Inside, it’s worth looking up: The ceiling painting of the Archangel is by Luigi Garzi (1699) – Many travel guides mistakenly attribute it to Luca Giordano. Beneath the church, spread across three levels, are a library containing about 8,000 volumes, an 18th-century nativity scene, and an ossuary. The Admission is free (Donations welcome); access to the crypt is occasionally limited; check the abbey's website for current hours.

4. Marina Grande: Arriving Like in a Movie

The ferry terminal isn't just a necessary evil—it's an attraction in its own right: Along the Via Roma Facades in shades of ochre, pink, and blue line the street, interspersed with bars, kiosks, and the scent of fresh pastries. This is where the The Heart of Everyday Life on the Island – In the morning, the fishing boats return; in the evening, the locals stroll to the passeggiata (an evening stroll).

Stop shortly after arriving at the historic Bar Roma Behind the Seemannskirche: The Pasticceria is considered the best place for the Procida dialect, the island's lemon cream pastries. Tip: Take a look at the yellow church Santa Maria della Pietà (17th century) right on the harbor—this is also where all the bus routes depart from.

5. Spiaggia del Pozzo Vecchio: The Beach from *The Postman*

The crescent-shaped bay with dark volcanic sand was caused by Il Postino World-famous: This is where Massimo Troisi filmed the scenes between Mario and Beatrice in 1994, which is why everyone talks only about the Postman's Beach ... From the harbor, you walk about 20 minutes, or you can take the bus heading toward the cemetery to get there.

Most of the beach is open to the public, and there is also a small lido with lounge chairs. Honest assessment: If you're looking for a romantic movie vibe and peaceful swimming, this is the place for you—but if you're expecting beach bars and entertainment, you'll be disappointed. That's exactly what makes it so appealing.

6. Vivara: The (Almost) Forbidden Islet

On the southwestern tip of Procida—connected by a narrow bridge built in 1957—lies the Nature Reserve Vivara: 36 hectares of a crescent-shaped volcanic crater rim, uninhabited, teeming with migratory birds, and bearing traces of a Bronze Age settlement. Access is strictly regulated: only with a guided tour, up to 30 people, Book online by 12:00 p.m. the day before; don't forget your ID (€10, reduced rate €5).

Important for 2026: Access is currently suspended due to maintenance work; please check the official booking portal of the Nature Reserve. Even the view from the Chiaiolella The green sickle, however, is worth a picture.

7. Punta Pizzaco: Sunset with a panoramic view of the islands

The steep coastal promontory to the east is Procida's most beautiful Sunset Viewpoint: The short walk winds its way past villas and prickly pear cacti, then the panoramic view of the Gulf of Naples opens up—on a clear day, you can see as far as Capri and Ischia. Snorkelers enter the water below the rocks; this area is considered one of the best on the island.

Combine your walk with a visit to the nearby Chiaia Beach: 186 steps lead from the Piazza Olmo down to the almost black tuff sand beach overlooking the Corricella. Note: Whatever you take down, you'll have to bring back up—so pack some water.

What other sights are worth seeing?

Even beyond the Big Seven, this small island still has plenty to offer for a second day—especially if you enjoy swimming:

  • Casale Vascello: the fortified old town center below the Terra Murata – a courtyard maze in typical island colors, free of charge and almost free of tourists
  • Santa Maria delle Grazie Sanctuary: Baroque church from 1679 on the Piazza dei Martiri, daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., free admission – with a view of Corricella and Terra Murata
  • Beach of the Chiaiolella: The longest stretch of beach in the southwest, featuring lidos, a marina, and views of Vivara—accessible by bus from Marina Grande
  • Beach of the Silurenza: The cove near Marina Grande, with shallow water and tuff caves—perfect for kids and for a quick dip before catching the ferry

Which museums are worth visiting on Procida?

Two small, charming houses—both in the Palazzo della Cultura at Terra Murata: The „Sebastiano Tusa“ Civic Museum“ (opened during the 2022 Capital of Culture year) showcases volcanic geology, Bronze Age artifacts from Vivara, and maritime traditions; opening hours vary by season. The Museum Casa di Graziella (5 €) recreates a typical 19th-century island home and is dedicated to Graziella, the heroine of Alphonse de Lamartine’s novel—the fisherman’s daughter who is still remembered today by the Sagra del Mare is selected.

The short answer: Flight to Naples, then ferry – From Naples, you can reach the island in 30 to 60 minutes; from Pozzuoli, it takes as little as 25 minutes. You don't need a car—and you're not allowed to bring one anyway during the high season.

  • Flight: to Naples-Capodichino. From the airport, the Alibus for 5 € Direct to the harbor in about 35 minutes (Porta di Massa and Beverello stops); a taxi costs a flat rate of €24, and a shared taxi costs €6 per person
  • Speedboat (aliscafo): from Naples Molo Beverello with Caremar or SNAV, about 30–40 minutes, about 20–25 €
  • Car ferry (traghetto): from Naples Calata Porta di Massa with Caremar, about 60 minutes, starting at about 17–19 € – the more reliable choice in rough seas, since speedboats are the first to be canceled
  • From Pozzuoli: with Medmar or Caremar 25–40 minutes, starting at about 10 € – convenient if you're traveling by car and parking on the mainland
  • Train: until Napoli Centrale, and from there by Alibus or on foot (about 20–25 minutes) to the harbor

Important: From the March 30 through October 15, 2026 There is a ban on non-residents’ vehicles landing on the island (Campania Regional Decree No. 23/2026)—rental bikes, scooters, and personal cars belonging to visitors from the mainland are not allowed on the island. Park your car in Naples or Pozzuoli and travel light: the island belongs to pedestrians.

How can you get from one highlight to the next on a budget?

On foot – At just over 4 km², Procida is so small that almost everything is within walking distance: From the Marina Grande to Corricella It takes 15–20 minutes to cross the island to the Chiaiolella about 40 minutes. However, expect Stairs and Slopes – Comfortable shoes are a must.

For tired legs, take the EAV Island Buses (Lines L1, L2, C1, C2) depart from the church at Marina Grande about every 30 minutes to all parts of the island; the best way to buy tickets is in advance at the tobacco (Tobacco shop). There are also open Microtaxis Based on a Piaggio Ape—the most charming way to get to your lodging with your luggage; agree on a price in advance. A luggage service at the port will, upon request, transport your luggage to your lodging.

What should you definitely try on Procida?

Procida's cuisine revolves around two things: Lemons and Fish. The Procida lemons is a huge, thick-skinned lemon with a sweet, edible white interior—the islanders cut it to Lemon Salad, a lemon salad with garlic, olive oil, mint, and peperoncino. It sounds weird, but it tastes like summer.

The cute landmark is the Procida dialect (also ox tongue, „Ochsenzunge“): an oblong puff pastry filled with warm lemon cream, created around 1950 by pastry chef Pasquale Mazziotti. These include Lemon Granita made from island lemons, limoncello—and on the savory side, the Procitian-style rabbit, slow-braised rabbit with tomatoes, white wine, and rosemary. From the sea come sea urchins, mantis shrimp (mantis shrimp) and the catch of the day: The boats pull into Marina Grande early in the morning, and the catch goes on sale right on the pier starting around 5:30 a.m.

Where's the best place to eat on Procida?

The rule of thumb: Corricella for the backdrop, Marina Grande for everyday life, Chiaiolella for sunset. These spots really won us over:

  1. Caracalè – Marina Corricella · €€ · About 35 seats right on the waterfront, bonito tartare, and spaghetti with mantis shrimp; good value for the price; be sure to make a reservation.
  2. La Lampara – Marina Corricella · €€ · Panoramic terrace overlooking the harbor with the island’s most romantic evening view; sea urchin-stuffed tortelli is the signature dish.
  3. La Medusa – Marina Grande · €€ · A staple since 1954, right on the ferry terminal; the menu changes daily depending on the catch—try the Pasta alla Pescatora Povera.
  4. La Conchiglia – Spiaggia della Chiaia · €€–€€€ · Dining with your feet practically in the water: accessible only via about 180 steps or by boat shuttle from Corricella—more of an experience than Michelin-starred cuisine, but unforgettable.
  5. Sejà – Via Principe Umberto · €€€€ · The island’s fine-dining destination: a seasonal tasting menu featuring local ingredients, run by two brothers; open only in the evenings and not every day; reservations required.

Street Food Tip: The best Lemon Granita After the ferry arrives, stop by the bar-gelateria Il Grottino on Via Roma, which Procida dialect in the Bar Roma.

Restaurant and hotel recommendations are based on current reviews and market research (as of July 2026)—opening hours and prices are subject to change at any time.

When is the best time to visit Procida?

The best times to travel are May, June, September and early October: warm enough for swimming, but without the crowds of midsummer. The climate is mild year-round—rarely oppressively hot in the summer and hardly ever bitterly cold in the winter.

In the august is when the island is at its busiest: Italian vacation season, packed ferries, peak prices—and all around Ferragosto (August 15) The beaches will be crowded. The second half of July is also marked by the Sagra del Mare Lively. From November through March, you can travel on a budget, but many hotels and restaurants are closed for the winter—on the other hand, you’ll practically have the island all to yourself.

What holidays and celebrations should you plan for?

Procida's festival calendar is short but intense—three times a year, the island reveals its true character:

  • Procession of the Mysteries (Good Friday): For over 500 years, the brotherhoods have been carrying heavy Misteri floats from Terra Murata to the harbor starting at dawn; as early as Maundy Thursday evening, the masked „apostles“ make their way through the alleys. In 2027, Good Friday falls on March 26.
  • Feast of St. Michael the Archangel (May 8 and September 29): The gold-and-silver statue of the Archangel is carried in processions across the island—with particular solemnity in the Millennium Year of 2026
  • Sagra del Mare with the Graziella Pageant (second half of July): A festival in Marina Grande where, since 1949, the „Graziella“ has been chosen—a young island girl in traditional dress, named after the heroine of Lamartine’s novel; free admission
  • Christmas season: Nativity tradition with a live nativity scene (live nativity scene) and the municipality's December program

A word of caution: During Holy Week and the Sagra del Mare, ferries and accommodations are fully booked—so either plan your trip accordingly or avoid these times.

What You Should Know About Procida

So you’ll arrive with realistic expectations—the island is beautiful, but it’s not an amusement park:

  • Stairs, stairs everywhere: Corricella, Chiaia Beach, lots of hotels—without good legs, Procida can be exhausting; almost nothing here is accessible
  • Dark volcanic sand instead of picture-perfect white: The beaches are gray to black, narrow, and fill up quickly in the summer—beautiful, but different from what the brochure promises
  • Seasonal operations: From November through March, many hotels, restaurants, and bars close—a winter visit is charming, but it requires some planning
  • Lunchtime rush: Between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m., day-trippers flock to Corricella; the most beautiful hours are in the early morning and evening
  • Limited availability, book early: Most houses have fewer than 15 rooms—if you arrive in Naples on a whim in July, you'll have a place to stay
  • Cash helps: In small bars, at the fish stand, and in microtaxis, cash is still the most reliable form of payment

Who would enjoy a trip to Procida?

Those seeking peace and quiet and romantics: There’s hardly any other place in Italy where you can unwind so quickly—in the evening, once the day-trippers have left, the island is all yours. Spot on.

Photographers and movie fans: The Corricella Panorama, Postino Beach, Ripley’s Alleys—there are more sights packed into 4 km² than in many big cities.

Gourmet: Lemon Salad, Procida dialect, freshly caught fish at fair prices—small but excellent.

Families: Works well with children who are steady on their feet; the flat Silurenza Bay and the Residence with its lemon garden help. It's tough for strollers.

Partygoers and shoppers: To be honest: no. There are no clubs, no shopping district—if that’s what you’re looking for, you’re better off in Ischia or Naples.

What's going on in Procida in the evening?

Nightlife takes place in three different areas—there are no clubs, and that's exactly what gives it its charm. At the Marina Grande Via Roma is the liveliest spot: bars with live music and DJ nights in the summer, open until around 2 a.m., plus the evening passeggiata.

The Corricella is a complete contrast: dinner on the pier against a backdrop of illuminated buildings, and then everything goes quiet—at night, all you can hear here is the water. At the Chiaiolella At sunset, the aperitivo crowd gathers at the beach lounges overlooking Vivara. Anyone who wants to go dancing afterward can take the ferry to Naples.

Combine a visit to Procida with Ischia, Naples, and the Amalfi Coast

Procida is the perfect stop on a golf tour: the neighboring island Ischia, with its hot springs and the Castello Aragonese is just a short ferry ride away—the combination of two such different islands is enough to fill an entire week. Editor's Insider Tip

Set your alarm and be at Marina Grande at half past six: That's when the fishing boats come in, and the catch of the day is sold right off the crates on the pier—sea urchins, mantis shrimp, glistening sardines. Afterward, grab a warm lemon pastry and an espresso at Bar Roma, then walk up Via Vittorio Emanuele toward Terra Murata before the first ferry carrying day-trippers docks. For an hour, the whole island is yours—and you’ll understand why the people of Procida would never trade their home for anything else.

Our conclusion: Procida is the Italy everyone is looking for

Procida has no world-famous museums, no luxury boutiques, and no jet set—and that is precisely where its strength lies. The island shows what the Gulf of Naples looked like before tourism arrived: a pastel-colored fishing village, a fortress overlooking the sea, a thousand-year-old abbey, and people who actually live here rather than just renting out properties. The title of European Capital of Culture 2022 has made the island better known, but it hasn’t spoiled it.

Procida is also a godsend for your budget: the most beautiful spots are free, you can enjoy a seafood meal on the pier at prices that would barely get you an aperitivo on Capri, and the ferry from Pozzuoli starts at around €10. A full day is enough to see the highlights—but it’s only when you stay overnight, as the lights of Corricella come on in the evening, that the island truly reveals its full charm.

The next step: Set your travel dates for May, June, or September, book one of the small hotels early—and plan a few days on the mainland around that with our Naples Highlights. You don't need to plan every detail of your visit to Procida: The island is small enough to just go with the flow—and that's exactly what it's there for.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions About Procida's Attractions

How many days do I need for Procida?

One full day is enough to see the highlights: Corricella, Terra Murata, the abbey, and a beach. If you stay overnight, you’ll get to experience the island without the day-trippers—that’s our editorial team’s top recommendation.

How do you get from the Naples Airport to Procida?

From Naples-Capodichino Airport, the Alibus takes about 35 minutes to reach the port (Beverello/Porta di Massa) for €5; a taxi costs a flat rate of €24. From there, you’ll transfer to a speedboat (about 30–40 minutes) or a ferry (about 60 minutes) to Procida.

Is Procida worth visiting as a day trip from Naples?

Yes—the crossing is short, and the highlights are close together. But the island is at its most beautiful early in the morning and in the evening, when the day-trippers have left; if you can, stay overnight.

Which is more beautiful: Procida or Ischia?

These are two very different kinds of trips: Ischia is large, green, and known for its hot springs and beaches, while Procida is small, authentic, and picturesque. Procida wins for tranquility and atmosphere, while Ischia wins for wellness and variety—the ideal combination.

Can I drive to Procida?

Not during the season: From March 30 to October 15, 2026, vehicles belonging to non-residents are not permitted to dock. The island is small and easy to explore on foot or by bus—it’s best to park your car in Naples or Pozzuoli.

Where on Procida was *Il Postino* filmed?

Especially at Marina Corricella and Pozzo Vecchio Beach, which has since been renamed „Spiaggia del Postino.“ Other scenes from the film were shot on Salina and Pantelleria.

Is Procida expensive?

No—Procida is significantly cheaper than Capri and also cheaper than Ischia. Most attractions are free, admission fees range from €5 to €13, and you can eat fresh fish at fair prices right on the pier.

Is Procida a good place to go swimming?

Yes, there are several beaches with dark volcanic sand: Chiaiolella and Ciraccio are the longest, Chiaia is the wildest (186 steps!), Pozzo Vecchio is the most famous, and Silurenza is the most family-friendly cove, right by the harbor.
