Bolzano - The Brenner corridor, one of the most important north-south connections in the Alps, will be closed for eight hours on Saturday, May 30. An announced demonstration on the Austrian side will force the complete closure of the A 13 Brenner highway and the B 182 Brenner federal highway. From 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., it will be impossible for motorists to cross the Brenner Pass. The authorities strongly advise drivers to avoid non-essential journeys on this day, as the only option is to take large-scale detours.
Massive restrictions for all traffic
The closure affects the section between the Schönberg toll station and the Brenner Pass in both directions. All vehicles must leave the A22 at the Sterzing exit between 10:30 and 20:00. If there is a tailback, the emergency services will divert traffic from the highway at Vahrn, Klausen and successively further south at the Bolzano exits.
Heavy goods vehicles will be particularly hard hit: on May 30 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., trucks will be subject to a comprehensive driving ban on the entire regular road network in the state as well as on the A22 highway in the northbound direction. Exceptions are only made for certain categories, such as the transportation of perishable goods.
Travelers must be prepared for disruptions not only on Saturday itself. Disruptions, traffic jams and restrictions in the Brenner Corridor area are already possible on Friday, May 29 and Sunday, May 31.
Public transportation will generally run according to schedule. No restrictions are currently planned for rail traffic. However, if Railjet or Eurocity trains over the Brenner Pass are canceled, no rail replacement service can be offered due to the road closure. In this case, passengers can switch to regional transport if seats are available. Bus delays and cancellations cannot be ruled out due to the increased volume of traffic and the detour. In general, high demand, overcrowding and possible cancellations are to be expected for trains and buses.
The imminent closure of the Brenner corridor requires all travelers to plan carefully or, ideally, to refrain from travelling on this day. Those affected can find up-to-date information and advice on the dedicated website brennersperre.provinz.bz.it.
