Turin - Jannik Sinner is facing fierce criticism in his home country of Italy after canceling his participation in this year's Davis Cup. His biggest rival on the pitch, the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz, of all people, now jumps to the South Tyrolean's side and vehemently defends his decision.
Alcaraz emphasized the enormous workload that Sinner has completed this season. „The schedule is very tough and difficult,“ said the Spaniard. This is especially true for Sinner, as he „reaches the finals in every tournament“. Alcaraz recalled that Sinner had won the Davis Cup for Italy in the last two years, competing in both singles and doubles.
„No one has given more sweat“
The Spaniard had strong words for his critics: „I don't think anyone has given more sweat and commitment to his country than him.“ Although Alcaraz understood that the Italian fans wanted to see Sinner play at home, he emphasized: „Everyone has to make their own decisions, and I personally understand his.“
In addition to the Davis Cup debate, Alcaraz also commented on the exciting battle for the top of the world rankings. He described the duel between him and Sinner as a „good fight“. The Spaniard praised the „great“ second half of the season of his rival, who recently won the tournaments in Vienna and Paris. Should Sinner end the year as number one, it would be highly deserved, says Alcaraz. Although he himself will try to prevent this, he wouldn't begrudge Sinner it: „It wouldn't be a disappointment.“
