Bolognaa - In just forty days, the Emilian capital will be transformed into a huge running track. The organizers of the Bologna Marathon (Termal Bologna Marathon) have now revealed the secret of the exact route that will take participants through the most beautiful corners of the city. As the event has already experienced a massive rush in the run-up, registrations for the main races are no longer possible; there is only limited capacity for the non-competitive distances.
A journey through history and architecture
The official starting shot for the marathon will be fired on Sunday, March 1, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. in Via Irnerio, right in the vibrant university district. The first few kilometers lead the runners directly into the medieval heart of the city. A particular highlight of the initial phase is the Via Saragozza: this iconic, porticoed section is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers athletes an impressive backdrop to find their rhythm.
After leaving the city center, the field crosses various residential areas and more modern sectors in the south and north of the city. This is where tradition and modernity meet, for example when the route passes the Fiera District. There, runners can admire the famous towers designed by star architect Kenzo Tange. The route has been designed to be both fast and flowing, which makes it particularly attractive for athletes aiming for a new best time.
The triumphant finale in Piazza Maggiore
The last six kilometers of the Bologna Marathon mark the return to the historic center. A symbolic moment of the final phase is the passing of the Piazza dei Martiri, a place of civil commemoration of the resistance. From there, the route leads back through magnificent streets such as Via Barberia and Via Farini into the hustle and bustle of the enthusiastic spectators.
The crowning finale finally takes place in the monumental Piazza Maggiore. Under the gaze of the Basilica of San Petronio and surrounded by palaces steeped in history, the athletes reach the finish line. For companions and families, the supporting program also includes the 5 km โBologna City Runโ and the โTigotร Kids Marathonโ on Saturday, 28 February, so that the entire weekend is dedicated to sport.
