ROM - On the 727th day of the Middle East conflict, a wave of pro-Palestinian protests swept across Italy. From north to south, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets to show their solidarity with the activists of the "Global Sumud Flotilla", which had been stopped by Israeli forces. The protests led to considerable traffic disruptions, occupations of universities and the first violent clashes. In the afternoon, 10,000 people are expected to take part in a new demonstration from the Colosseum in Rome alone.
Blockades and occupations from Naples to Turin
The actions partially paralyzed public life in many major cities. In Naples activists occupied the tracks at the main station and disrupted train services. Also in Rome demonstrators blocked traffic around Termini station. In Milan a protest march entered Cadorna station, while students occupied the state university and declared their readiness for the general strike announced for Friday. In Turin the seat of the humanities faculties was occupied and hundreds of demonstrators blocked the southern ring road. The most violent scenes took place in BolognaThere, a train of pupils and students tried to block the station, but was pushed back by carabinieri in protective gear with batons.
Political reactions and hope for a ceasefire
The protests are taking place against the backdrop of important political and diplomatic developments. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani surprisingly declared that the government was "ready to consider trade sanctions against Israel". At the same time, the Italian House of Representatives passed a resolution supporting a US peace initiative for Gaza by a large majority. There is also movement internationally: Arab mediators are holding "productive talks" with Hamas over a 20-point US plan to end the war, according to media reports. A positive response from Hamas, albeit with amendments, could arrive today.
