Morning fog hangs over the hills near Perugia, a medieval castle towers over the valley—and right in the middle of it all lie the 18 holes of Antognolla Golf, a par-71 championship course that Robert Trent Jones Jr. sculpted into the Umbrian landscape.
Over 6,112 meters, wide fairways, large, undulating greens, and cleverly placed water hazards wind their way through oak forests and olive groves. The course reopened in 2018 following a comprehensive renovation, and in 2019 it hosted the PGA Italian Championship—tournament golf set within a luxury resort currently under development around the Castello di Antognolla.

The Course: 18 holes over 6,112 meters
The championship course measures 6,112 meters from the white tees and is a par 71. Five tee colors—ranging from 4,999 to 6,112 meters—make it fair for both single-handicap players and aspiring golfers. Wide, sweeping fairways wind through oak forests and olive groves, while large, undulating greens, along with strategically placed water hazards and bunkers, force players to think carefully before every shot. A Course Rating of 73.1 and a Slope of 132 show that to score well here, you have to plan your lines—not just hit the ball far.
Who designed Antognolla Golf?
The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., one of the world’s most influential golf architects. The original course dates back to 1997; in 2018, it reopened following a comprehensive renovation. Jones Jr. makes use of the natural topography of the Umbrian hills: he has the fairways follow the contour lines, repeatedly opening up panoramic views of the valley and the Castello di Antognolla, thereby combining a sporting challenge with breathtaking scenery. In 2019, Antognolla hosted the PGA Italian Championship.
Antognolla: A golf resort centered around a castle
The golf course is the centerpiece of an estate spanning approximately 500 hectares, which is being developed into a luxury resort centered around the medieval Castello di Antognolla. The facility includes a clubhouse with a restaurant and bar, a pro shop, and a golf academy with PGA pros, a driving range, a putting green, a practice green, and a practice bunker. You can rent clubs, trolleys, and electric carts on site. In addition to the PGA Italian Championship, the Alps Tour and the Antognolla International Pro-Am have also been held here.
Getting There and the Best Time to Visit
Antognolla is located about 20 kilometers north of Perugia on the Strada San Giovanni del Pantano. Perugia Airport (San Francesco d’Assisi) is about a 30-minute drive away, while Rome and Florence are each just over two hours away by car. Since the course is irrigated and playable year-round, you can visit any time of year—though spring and fall are the most pleasant, when temperatures are mild and the hills glow with lush green or autumnal colors.
Who would benefit from Antognolla Golf?
Antognolla is a great choice for anyone looking for a challenging championship course set against a stunning backdrop: ambitious golfers who enjoy tournament-style conditions and long holes, and those who want to combine golf with resort-style comfort, fine dining, and the Umbrian countryside. The course is also ideal for a golf trip as a couple or in a small group.
If you're looking for an affordable nine-hole course to play after work or a flat, easy course, you're better off looking elsewhere—Antognolla is deliberately designed to be a championship-level course in the upscale segment. You'll find more options in our overview of Golf in Italy.
