The Italian government is preparing a further extension of state relief at the pumps. As Economics and Finance Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti confirmed on the fringes of the G7 finance ministers' meeting, his department is working intensively on a continuation of the reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel. The aim is to continue to cushion the burden on citizens and companies caused by high energy costs.
Focus on relief for freight forwarders
In addition to the general measure benefiting all drivers, the government in Rome is also planning specific support for the particularly affected road transport sector. Giorgetti explicitly mentioned the development of measures for the transport industry (autotrasporto), which plays a key role in the Italian supply of goods and is suffering particularly from the rise in diesel prices.
Decisive meeting on Friday
Time is of the essence, as the current tax reduction regulation expires next Friday, May 22, 2026. On the same day, the government has invited representatives of the transport industry to a meeting at Palazzo Chigi, the official residence of the Prime Minister. The results of this meeting should form the basis for the final decision by the Council of Ministers to extend the aid measures.
