The upcoming Italian national holiday, the Festa della Repubblica on June 2, is causing a considerable wave of travel in the country. According to a recent survey by the Italian hoteliers' association Federalberghi, around 15.5 million Italians will take the opportunity for a short break. This corresponds to an increase of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year and generates an estimated total turnover of 6.8 billion euros.
A sense of home shapes travel plans
The vast majority of holidaymakers remain loyal to their own country: 91.6% of travelers have opted for a destination within Italy. Only 8.4 percent are planning a trip abroad. In terms of domestic destinations, the coast is the undisputed leader with 59.6% of mentions, followed by art cities (15.2%) and mountain regions (11.3%). Among the few foreign travelers, European capitals are the most popular choice with 61.1 percent. The average trip duration is short at 3.3 nights, underlining the character of the break as an extended weekend, mainly for relaxation (69.2%) and pleasure (59.1%).
Stable budget and direct booking channels
The travel budget of Italians is stable with a slight increase. An average of 441 euros per person is planned for a short trip, compared to 436 euros in the previous year. The choice of accommodation shows a varied picture: Hotels are preferred by 29.1% of travelers, but private options are also very popular. For example, 26.6 percent stay with relatives or friends, while 20.3 percent rent a vacation apartment. One interesting aspect is booking behavior: More than half of holidaymakers (56.1 percent) book their accommodation directly, bypassing the major online portals, which are used by 32.7 percent. The traditional travel agency only plays a subordinate role with 8.1 percent.
