MILAN/VICENZA - A black Thursday for occupational safety in northern Italy: two separate fatal accidents at work occurred within a few hours of each other in Lombardy and Veneto. Both incidents once again call for an urgent debate on safety standards in Italian companies.
The series of tragic events began in the province of Milan. A 62-year-old Italian worker lost his life at a company in Bubbiano that specializes in the production of steel coils. According to initial findings, the man was hit by a heavy steel coil and fatally injured.
Tragedy in the province of Milan
Although work colleagues immediately administered first aid and the emergency services were quickly on the scene, all help came too late for the 62-year-old. The Carabinieri have begun an investigation into the exact cause of the accident in order to find out how this tragic incident could have happened. The plant was temporarily shut down to allow the necessary investigations to be carried out.
Truck driver killed near Vicenza
Only a short time later, another tragedy occurred in an industrial hall in Montecchio Maggiore in the province of Vicenza. A truck driver was killed when a massive beam of the hall structure collapsed during a maneuver. The truck had apparently hit the beam, causing it to collapse onto the driver's cab and bury the driver underneath. The arriving fire department rescuers were only able to determine that the man had died. For safety reasons, the entire building was evacuated immediately. The investigation by the relevant authorities is also in full swing. These latest deaths add to the sad statistics and underline the continuing risks in many areas of work in the country.
