Rome - Sofia Di Vico (15) from the province of Caserta was in the Italian capital with her team, Union Basket Maddaloni, for the „Mare di Roma Trophy in Pink“ tournament. But the sporting excursion ended in tragedy. The tournament has since been officially suspended.
Dramatic emergency at dinner
Late on Thursday evening, April 2, an alarm was raised at a campsite in the south of Rome. According to the information available so far, the teenager suddenly felt ill during dinner with her team. The 15-year-old suffered from a known allergy to milk proteins. Although she immediately took the medication she had with her in case of an emergency, her condition deteriorated dramatically during transportation.
The girl was admitted to Grassi Hospital in Ostia. However, all help came too late: shortly after arriving at the emergency room, the teenager died during the night.
Autopsy should bring clarity
The responsible public prosecutor's office immediately opened an investigation into involuntary manslaughter. Although an anaphylactic shock due to the food allergy is the investigators' main lead, a sudden health incident for other reasons has not yet been completely ruled out. An autopsy has already been ordered to clarify the exact dynamics and cause of death of the young sportswoman beyond doubt.
