Castiglione di Sicilia - Following the shocking discovery of a body in the rural area of Mitogio, a district of Castiglione di Sicilia, the Carabinieri have arrested three people. The lifeless body of 66-year-old Giuseppe Florio was discovered two days ago by a passer-by - wrapped in bed sheets and plastic bags. The public prosecutor's offices in Catania and Messina have now issued arrest warrants for a couple for murder and for another woman for disposing of the body.
Brutal crime in Taormina
The victim, who was originally from Giardini Naxos, fell victim to an extremely violent crime. The 66-year-old was killed by hammer blows and numerous stab wounds. Investigators assume that the murder did not take place at the place where the body was found on Mount Etna, but that it was transported there. In the course of the investigation, which was quickly extended to the province of Messina, officers came across a completely burnt-out Fiat Panda in the village of Santa Venera (Taormina). The vehicle was registered to the victim and had been identified in advance by an acquaintance.
Clues lead to the private sphere
The investigation soon focused on the man's private life. He regularly stayed in an apartment in a social housing complex in Trappitello, where the 50-year-old main suspect and her 39-year-old partner, a man from Palagonia with a criminal record, lived. The third person arrested is a 53-year-old woman originally from Sesto San Giovanni.
Extensive analysis of video surveillance equipment, witness statements and forensics by the Carabinieri and the scientific department (RIS) put the investigators on the trail of the suspects. According to the responsible public prosecutors Francesco Curcio and Antonio D'Amato, it was possible to reconstruct that the act of violence took place in the victim's house, where clear traces of the brutal attack were recovered.
