Police in Monza have arrested a 25-year-old Cuban man. He is accused of sexually abusing a 13-year-old girl who he had contacted via Instagram. The man had initially led the girl to believe on social media that he was only 17 years old.
The arrest was made on Friday, July 11, after officers from the mobile task force took immediate action. The girl had called for help herself after the crime using the emergency number 112, whereupon the investigation was initiated in accordance with the "Codice Rosso" applicable in Italy. This procedure enables particularly rapid and comprehensive processing in the case of serious violent or sexual offenses.
According to the investigation so far, the suspect had been in contact with the girl via Instagram for a week. He pretended to be only a few years older than her and eventually persuaded her to meet up. However, the 13-year-old only agreed on the condition that she would not be alone with him.
On July 10, the two initially met at the train station in Monza. There, the man persuaded the teenager to accompany him near the Villoresi Canal. It was only there that he revealed his real age to her. When the girl wanted to end the encounter, the man allegedly used force, according to the police reconstruction. The investigators assume that he forced the girl to have sexual intercourse despite her resistance. When she tried to escape, he allegedly threatened her with a knife and finally took her back to the station.
The following day, the 13-year-old confided in a friend and filed a complaint. A Coca-Cola bottle from which the suspected perpetrator had drunk and a condom wrapper were recovered during forensics at the crime scene. In the 25-year-old's apartment, the police also found items of clothing that he is said to have been wearing at the time of the crime, as well as a towel. The items were hidden between dirty laundry. The knife that was allegedly used to threaten the victim was also found.
It also emerged that the man had already booked a flight ticket to Spain and packed a suitcase. He was taken to the San Quirico prison in Monza. The investigation is ongoing.
The dangers of social media
This case once again highlights the potential dangers for minors on social networks. Platforms such as Instagram are used by millions of young people. However, they also offer attackers the opportunity to make contact under false identities and build trust. Experts and authorities have long warned against grooming, in which perpetrators specifically target minors online in order to abuse them offline later.
The police and child protection organizations are therefore appealing to parents and guardians to keep an eye on their children's online activities. This is strongly advised:
- Open communication: Talk to your children about the risks on the Internet and encourage them to report suspicious contacts or unpleasant situations immediately.
- Check privacy settings: Ensure that minors' social media profiles are set to "private" and can only be viewed by known individuals.
- Dealing with strangers: Explain that online acquaintances, even if they seem friendly, should always be treated with caution and that real-life meetings without the parents' knowledge are taboo.
- Use the reporting functions: Suspicious messages or profiles should be reported immediately to the platform operators and, if necessary, to the police.
The case in Monza is likely to trigger further discussions about the protection of minors in the digital space and the responsibility of social media platforms. Investigations are ongoing to clarify all the circumstances surrounding this shocking act.
